What could cause this and is it a easy fix?

Looks like a typical bad seal. Do you have the power train warranty???? This would be covered.

I did my rear pinion seal myself and it was pretty simple. Something tells me the transmission main seal would not be that bad. You will loose a lot of fluid when you do so. Catch it and put it back in, or buy some new ATF-4

On another note... check out your U-joint Looks like the seal has gone on that lower one.

Thanks, we have the 7 year 70k mile warranty, bumper to bumper. and yeah I'll have to look at that, the truck was on a lift yesterday when I took the pic.

Mine had the same leak, tail shaft seal. It is covered under warranty 7/70 but it has a $100.00 deductable per incident. I would wait till the rear pinion seal goes as well or something else. Other wise that is an exspensive deductable for a $10.00 seal that is very easy to replace.

$150 Hate that crap.

You can change that seal your self. Just unbolt the driveshaft from the pinion and slide it off the transmission output shaft. Next pry out the old seal and clean out the well. To install the new seal use a large socket that fits onto the outer lip and lightly until its flush and lightly coat the lip on the seal with fresh tranny fluid. Use some sand paper to scuff up the driveshaft where the seal rides. Now slide the driveshaft back onto the transmission output shaft making sure the seal doesn't get messed up and bolt the driveshaft back onto the pinion.

Thanks for the detailed instructions! I'll have to do that soon, maybe I can get back on the lift and do it LOL!

If one of you could, please link me on orileys or autozone the correct seal for my truck, I'm not new to mechanical repairs but finding the right parts I am. I'm not familiar with with all the parts on cars and trucks.

Its the same seal. The part numbers are the same. National always shows yhat same pic.
