Friday from a stop the rpms went up truck failed to go for a second then it took off, thought I was between neutral and drive or something no cel. Tonight same deal except it died I got if off to the side before it puked out but it did, let it sit stared up normal with a cel, went to the parts shop no scanner. Plan on going to one with a scanner tomorrow but that's 20 miles. Will I make it? Any ideas? Mine is the map sensor. Thanks Josh

 

Shouldn't need a scanner..

Put the key in the ignition but don't start it in this sequence.

Turn key on, off, on, off then on and watch the odometer after leaving it on the third time. It should spit out the faults as P codes. Like P0131, P0500, etc...

 

Ok, book said I needed a scanner, my 96 avenger had the key dance too, but you had to count the flashes

 

No dice, tried a few times no luck

 

Is it running funny at all? You could look at the camshaft position sensor as well. You should be able to replace both that and the MAP by yourself if you can diagnose which one it is.

 

The cps was my other thought, I put on over 200 miles since friday with no issues till tonight, has been bogging a little today and knew something was up but I was on my way home to check it out then it happened and the cel

 

Oh and my gas mileage went up 1.5mpg since friday as well normally I'd be happy but it was weird, 16.5 to 17.9??? Not sure how that happened, I drive hwy to and from work and lots of hwy this weekend, that's not unusual but it's never been that high

 

Hmm when if you find out what sensor if broken let me know, 1.5mpg gain by taking a hammer to a sensor!! I like that mod LOL

You might want to try removing the battery cables over night and see if it helps. Might want to just check the battery cables anyways. These trucks are very iffy when it comes to a bad ground.

 

You can also disconnect everything from the battery and touch the terminals together (without touching the battery). This will reset the pcm. Good luck.
