And hey, we are fewer than 35 million people in the second largest country in the world. We can't afford to have "interstates" all over the place. You were probably on the 401 (Ontario's "interstates" are the 400 series highways), the part through Toronto is perportadly the busiest highway in north america?
That's the one, I was fairly confused driving through Toronto the first time, heading to Oakville, I was coming from Detroit. "Oakville?" you ask.. "But that's southwest of Toronto!" Yea I figured that out after driving for 25-30 minutes, it was dark. I saw the Canadian side of Niagara too, (which is better by the way.) And yes, it is an incredibly busy road, I wouldn't doubt it's the longest, busiest single stretch of road. I'm surprised it doesn't stay 3 lanes all the way to Montreal. In 'merica it would be, but we often over do it.

Not far out of The Big Smoke (toronto), things get quiet pretty quickly, except for weekend traffic. I lived along the 401, about halfway between Montreal and Toronto for most of my life, and travel that route home to family fairly often - if they would just keep right except to pass, we'd all be OK!
