What is this that is broken
Montreal likes to think the are European - driving there is similar to driving in Rome or Paris - except in Montreal they are on the agressive side of assertive. I've driven in all three and would much rather drive in Rome than Montreal - in Italy the theory is if you want that space, take it, I won't hit you, but if you aren't using it, I will.
And hey, we are fewer than 35 million people in the second largest country in the world. We can't afford to have "interstates" all over the place. You were probably on the 401 (Ontario's "interstates" are the 400 series highways), the part through Toronto is perportadly the busiest highway in north america?

Not far out of The Big Smoke (toronto), things get quiet pretty quickly, except for weekend traffic. I lived along the 401, about halfway between Montreal and Toronto for most of my life, and travel that route home to family fairly often - if they would just keep right except to pass, we'd all be OK!
