Default New guy!

Hey guys, just registered after lurking for awhile.

Of course, why did I finally register? after 100K miles of happiness and problem free 3.7L V6, my poor dakota took a turn for the worse. While driving easy it started missing, and threw a CEL. I pull the code, and get P0301, and P0201.

So I put a brand new coil and plug in cylinder number one, and the problem persists. I put a new injector on cylinder number 1, and also a new TPS sensor.

Still barely idling, and miss firing. I do get a .8V-2V spread on the injector plug for cylinder number 1, but when I pull the injector plug off during idling the motor sound and stumble stays the same...I pull number 3 and the motor gets real rough. More proof cylinder number 1 isn't firing.

So, I have injector power from the ECU, injector is good, new coil and plug, so spark should be fine? I pulled the valve cover to check the rocker arms, all looked OK, in fact it looked very clean.

What do I do next? Fuel filter? I've never changed it..could it be water in gas? I'm scared to nickle and dime the issue to death. I did move the ASD relay to the blower motor and switched the two, blower motor worked fine.

Thanks guys!

Hey, thanks for the welcome!

it's a 2006 dakota...

I in fact was so fed up with it, I took it to a shop around the corner. Owner is a super nice guy, and is saying he'll charge me 50 bucks and will point me to the right direction. I figure 50$ isn't bad, and if he's wrong, he said he will help me out again if need be.

My biggest problem is I have a leak down tester, but don't have an air compressor at home, and my "shop" is my trailer that I have to leave in storage, about 45 minutes away. So driving the truck there is out of the question with how bad it's running.

I downloaded the FSM, and still am at a loss. I haven't changed the fuel filter, or checked the pump, all seem to work fine for every other cylinder, except cylinder number 1.

Thanks again guys!

Thanks Dusty...

So the shop that looked at it is telling me it's the ecu.

I half way believe it; I read in the fsm that the ecu shuts off the injector for the cylinder that was faulty. So I guess I'm stuck trying a new PCM.

Anyone else have a take on this?

my pcm took a dump on me last year. it actually had tripped the code (p0601) for over a year, and didnt have any issues untill it started to run really rough then it would be fine, then start acting up untill it was hard to drive. The dealer wanted over 1k for a new pcm. i told them to F* off and bought one off ebayfor 200 bucks.

The only thing that I dont see you state that you did, I assume you did, just covering all bases is

Disconnect the battery for a bit, this will clear the computer. This way if it is shutting off an injector, and the computer is still good, you will be able to put it back to factory.

if the injector has not been pushing fuel, check your spark plug, chances are the electrode is going away real quick, it uses the fuel along with the air to cool off. This will help tell you for sure that no fuel is coming out, aside from being flooded with gas.

Other than that, all that I can tell you to do if the PCM seems ok is to put a compression tester on it, my understanding is that these engines like to loose head gaskets, perhaps yours lost it on 1. Can you hear any noise that is out of place in the engine bay?

if you pulled the injector plug while running, the ECu certainly killed that cylinder. Reset the computer and make sure all injector plugs are snug.

If the problem persists, try switching injectors with another cylinder to see if the problem follows the injector. I have seen injectors DOA right from the dealer. (We had a dead injector in the 4 that we got for our caliber.)
