You have a good point about short trips but for comparison my drive to work is 2.5 miles & I've only seen mine go down to 12.8 MPG under my driving, though it showed 12.6 when I bought it.
If you haven't reset the console mileage calculator, you are seeing how the old owner and you are doing for mileage. The output is an average (don't know if it is a rolling average, weighted average or a straight mean) so it could be that it is an average for all of the miles driven on the truck. Push the reset in mileage mode and drive for a week, then report back.
every time I fill up, i reset everything. it makes sense that the truck is running rich cause of the short distance drivin. Ill let u guys know what my milage is per tank...Im gonna top it off today. With mixed town and highway ive seen 11.5 to 12 which isnt bad since the new tires.
Tires are your big killers. Rotational weight is very parasitic. The aggressive tread doesn't help either. Some light, skinny street tires will yield you a nice MPG boost. Gears as well, altho shorter gears will hurt around town. They really help on the highway tho. The biggest thing that helps is staying conscious of your rpm's. I average 22-24mpg on the highway with my cruise set at 55. This is turning around 1500 rpms. Going up to 65 is around 1900 rpms iirc. The difference is a average of 17-19 mpgs. That's pretty big. 75-80 mph dips my average to 15-16 mpg. 25 mph for the same trip has a VERY noticeable impact on how much I throw in my tank every week.
