Default truck started on its own

I have a 2008 dakota. The other day i got out put the keys in my pocket and as i'm walking away from the truck the doors start lockind and unlocking on their own several times and the horn honks lights flash when it locks. I think the keys where twisted around in my pocket and the buttons where getting pushed. After about 5-10 seconds of this the truck started on its own. No keys in the ignition! I don't have the remote start option on my key fob, so how did it do this? Is it remote start built into all dakota's it just isn't activated? Maybe if so the computer got confused and it started????????

welcome to the forum. I moved this to the main 3rd gen section to get more traffic. I have never heard of a 3rd gen starting on it's own. So I can't help but I'm sure someone will chime in.

I'm thinking no way the remote start is a standard but non-activated option as that would be an extra cost for no reason.

Did you buy it used?

They have aftermarket remote starts that use the factory key fob in the sequence of lock-unclock-lock to activate the remote start.

Maybe someone added it and if you bought it used, you and the dealer were none the wiser of it?

If you bought it new......might want to head over to that church...

i doubt theres much more than a sooftware switch to enable the remote start....i doubt the wire goes directly from the ignition to the starter moter, more likely to the computer
and then the computer starts the car (test is just bump the key to start and watch the vehicle finish the process for you)

so now you just need to tell the ecm to "remote start" maybe you found a cheat code in the remote protocol

in fact the remote start feature would be more cost effective to build into the ecm rather than having a second computer that would have to be installed

what buttons are on the remote for a non-remotestart dodge dakota

my friends jeep has a hatch button where my start button is

i have also had the phantom start but its cause i sat on my keys

EDIT: im wrong there is a mopar remote start kit addon

I wonder if it would turn itself off after like 15 mins, like a remote start would/does... if so, wait till summer to fix it, then you can tell people you are telekinetic and you use your skilz to avoid scraping ice off your windshield.

Okay, I looked up this tip start thing, and I agree, it's probably that, but this has still been a fun thread!
