Default '05 Dakota Burning under the hood

Something under my hood smells like burning rubber or plastic. Belt appears to be fine. Smelt like it might have been coming from the alternator. Just don't wanna spend a bunch of money to fix the wrong thing. It leaks a little tranny fluid every winter from one of the fittings on the trans cooler lines. Not sure if it could just be some tranny fluid on the exhaust. Anyone with some advice???? Could really use some help.

welcome to DF, I will move this to the general section so it gets more traffic. Can you see if the fluid is leaking on the exhaust pipes? That could be the culprit. Did you open the hood with it running and see if you could spot any smoke coming from somewhere?

Default Hahaha!!!

So... funny story. I finally got a chance to get under the vehicle yesterday morning. Makes me feel really retarded but I had a grocery bag of all things that got hung up on the H pipe of my exhaust. Got 98% of it off with a putty knife and gotta wait for the last bit to melt off. What a stupid problem to have but a relief never the less. Thanks for the reply and the welcome though.

Default 2005 Dodge Dakota

My wife and I are looking at buying a 2005 Dodge Dakota with 67,000 miles it has 3.7 L V6. I have heard the V6 engine is gutless is that correct? Is it a good truck? how good is the V6 or powerful or speedy?

Plenty on here love their v6's, but there is nothing like a V8. I love mine. These are heavy trucks and the extra two cylinders really helps in the acceleration world, unless you have 4.10 gears like Nick...There are more mods available for the V8 as well, mileage is pretty much the same, but.......I will let the V6 guys chime in now...

I have a 2005 3.7L with 3.55 gears, and with these trucks, final gear ratio can make all the difference. At 3.55 it's not very quick off the line if that's what you're looking for, but it's a truck...and it's done whatever I've asked it to (within reason). Max tow weight with a properly equipped hitch on my truck is 4,550 lbs, and that works out to about a full-size 5x10' enclosed U-Haul trailer with furniture, and it did it well. Certainly no Ecoboost or Hemi, but if that's what you're looking for, you know where to look.

Best thing you could do if you pull the trigger is switch to 4.10 gears. From what I've heard, coming from 3.55 on this truck it's night and day, if yours is so equipped. Apparently it gets considerably better city mileage too.

Good luck!

I'm not sure if the v6 is gutless but I've heard the mileage is just as good with the v8. If that's why you're looking at the v6 it's not all it's cracked up to be. I love the 4.7. Lots of power. More than you'll need.

By the way the tranny coolant lines corrode on our truck like I never seen before. My dealers said mine are real bad but not leaking yet at 96k. He said many others have had to have them replaced already. The cost? about $400.00 parts and labor. He said it is a three hour job. My oil pan will get done at the same time since it is rusted just about through. Total with oil pan? $650.00. I think not will the Pentastar live in my driveway ever again.
