Default Trailer light wire questions...

on my 05 Dakota 4x4 v6 I have a factory tow package but does not have a factory 7-pin connector hooked up. It does have a bundle of wires located near the rear bumper and taped to the tow package. Im assuming these are pre-wired for the 7-pin plug that I need to install. This bundle is one thick strand that breaks down to two separate parts near the end. In one side on the two sections houses 8 wires, and the other section has 4. Is this for the 7-pin connector I need to hook up?

Does anybody know what color wire does what?

Do I need to have a trailer brake box for these wires to work? I just need light to work.

If you can help, please break it down to me like I'm 5 years old please?

Thanks,

Id say someone cut it off. If it has the factory tow package, it should of had a 7-Way and 4-Way mounted to the hitch. Like mine does.

The wires are sealed nice and have a drop of glue on each tip. Possible that they were cut and someone took the time to seal them up, but that seems like a lot of work. The factory always pre connected a 7 and 4 pin?

Mine is complete, I have the tow package. I will try to get a good pic as well. I think there are trailer brake wires in there, but you don't need one for the lights to work. It's a dual 4/7 bracket with both. I think the 7 pin is for trailer brakes and 4 pin is for non or older trailers.

I
If it had a tow package it came pre-wired with both the 4 pin and 7 pin attached to the left side of the hitch.

As per the repair manual:
Trailer Tow Wiring - Vehicles equipped with a factory-installed trailer towing package have a trailer tow wire harness and both a 4-way and a heavy duty 7-way trailer tow connector installed on a bracket on the trailer hitch receiver. This package also includes an electric trailer brake wiring provision that terminates at a connector located on top of the large body harness connection under the instrument panel to the left of the brake pedal, as well as an electric trailer brake pigtail harness and an instruction card that are stored in the glove box when the vehicle is shipped from the factory.
The connection under the dash should be blueish.

Page 262 of your owners manual also has some info on what pin is what for both the 4-pin and 7-pin. As for colors of the wires, I couldnt tell ya right off hand with out checking again. Btw here is a decent generic info on colors that may help http://www.etrailer.com/faq-wiring.aspx

The repair manual also has schematics for the wiring too on pag 8W - 54 - 1, but like I said I cant tell ya right off hand without looking.

Good luck!

It looks as if yours doesnt have the bracket...

Off to the right of the photo you can see both attached to the bracket.
