While I was wiring up a wiring harness for trailer lights, I discovered this wire. This blue and white wire ends with the bundle of wires for the license plate wires. It is dipped and am curious what it goes to and why it would be there. Also, I never thought to ask, but did all 05 dakotas come with overdrive tow/haul function?

I though that too, but with the factory tow package that should already be in the connectors, right? Then I thought it was for trailer brakes, but that too should already be connected.....at least that's how my twisted mind sees it...love the new sig pic!

The plug goes to the license plate wiring. I only unplugged it so I could get a better picture. I thought it might be something to do with trailer brakes too, but it doesn't make any sense (at least I wouldn't think) because that is the only "spare" wire back there. My dakota did not have the factory tow package. It only has the haul/overdrive function, which I always thought dealt with the tow package. Guess I was wrong.

My guess would possible be a reverse light wire for trailers that have reverse lights. Easiest way to find out is get a wire tester and and try all your possible trailer wire options. Left/right turn signals, brakes, reverse, stuff like that to see if there is any power when any of those happen.

My truck has the tow package and therefore came with the wire harness for electric trailer brakes. The harness came in a plastic bag and needs to be wired to truck in the event you need it. Since I don't need it, I have never looked at the instuctions for installing it. But I do know that an electric brake set up requires its own power source. I'm willing to bet that is the power source to the installable harness.

Deer Hunter, if you happen to have the instructions, would you mind checking to see where the blue brake wire from the 7 plug would connect to the truck and also where the black power wire would go? I was going to run those wires myself because I know how to wire in a brake controller box and all the components, but if those are already ran on my truck, it would be nice to splice into them instead of running wire myself.

the mystery of the wire! It seems useless to me for them to put the wire there.. the 7pin harness has an aux to hook up things like that. Maybe it's a factory installed lead for an overhead light in a shell, or maybe it's not factory installed at all and a previous owner had a shell.
