Default Towing 2006 2WD Dakota with Getrag 238 manual trans

I hope someone can fill me in on why the 2006 Dakota 2WD with a 6 speed manual cannot be towed with all 4 wheels down? I've contacted my dealer and Dodge customer service and they just quote the owner's manual which says it will cause severe transmission damage. I can understand this with an automatic, but with a manual in neutral??? I've compared the parts diagrams of the Getrag 238 with other 6 speed manuals that can be towed 4 wheels down and can't see any major differences. Are the transmissions made that cheaply?

I sure hope someone has a rational reason why they limit the truck like this. Thank for any help.

Are you moving or is it for going on trips with a motorhome? The reason I ask, is because it might be worth it to just pull the driveshaft to eliminate the risk.. that being said, I wish I knew the answer for you. You're right, it doesn't make sense. If it did make sense, couldn't you also cause "severe transmission damage" by coasting down a hill?

I think they are full of it, perhaps it's a generic message with the automatic in mind.

I agree with you. They assume that almost everyone has an auto because manuals are way more rare, since they are special order.

If you tow with the tranny in nuetral, only the main shaft will be spinning, the gears won't be, the gears are what splashes the oil around and lubes everything. I would not tow it with the rear tires on the ground without disconnecting the driveshaft.

What he said! On most manual transmissions, the oil is moved around by the input shaft, so that you can sit in neutral and idle without screwing things up. If you are towing, with the rear wheels down, only the output shaft spins, since it is neutral. Therefore, no lube gets spread around, and as we all know, lube makes everything work better.

just drop the drive shaft mate, it's not worth havin' to replace the transmission on a hunch.

4 bolts and job done.
