I originally bought a cheap ebay ($40) one just so I could see what all the hype was about. I ran that for about a year before I found a used K&N that I have now. Honestly, aside from the really cool sound, I don't notice a huge difference with either one over the stock air box. They claim XX HP and XX MPG increase with these things, maybe so, I did not notice anything drastic. The only thing really different from the ebay ones versus the high dollar ones is a shield that is supposed to isolate the filter part from the heat of the engine bay (hence "cold air"), however, the shield on my K&N does a very poor job of completely isolating the filter section. Maybe some others are better at it, but unless you can get the filter actually outside the engine bay, to me, it's not really a "cold air" intake and I have yet to find one for our trucks that gets the filter out of the engine bay (that you can buy, some members have made theirs that do). Imo, get you a cheap one off ebay so you can see what it does then spend the money for a high dollar one if you want the shield, or make one, for what they are worth.

My new Dak came with a Air Raid w/ Shield but W/O the intake tube. Nice sound and appears to be a good fit. But I be damned if there is any real performance improvement.

Just make your own with PVC or buy a cheap eBay intake. The bigger names you get the same thing just paying for the name.

Does the length of the intake matter? I was thinking of plumbing my air filter behind the front bumper but didn't know if it would cause any problems, I wouldn't think it would.

No..that would be good. You would get some nice cool air from that. As long as the air can flow through the piping you would be okay. So probably like 3" would allow decent airflow and you might actually notice some performance gains

you should see increased airflow, but be forewarned, You will want to avoid puddles and high water like the plague, or you could suck water straight into the engine and you would be finished. FYI

I've ran 30mph through deep water and no water came up into the engine bay.

That's why I thought about plumbing it so it's tucked behind the front bumper so as to avoid as much water as possible. It's definitely doable on the driver side or after an efan has been installed.
