The resonators really don't restrict the exhaust, they are just empty chambers that cancel exhaust waves to make it quiet. Most of us remove both resonators (if equipped, some only have one). Best thing to do is remove both resonators, hack off the factory muffler and install a nice low restriction muffler (I recommend magnaflow). You can just remove the resonators, but I don't know how much louder it will make it because of the huge factory muffler that will still be there. I hacked my exhaust system off from the y-pipe back and got a cheapo dual exhaust system off ebay for like $160 that had a single in/dual out muffler and straight exhaust tips out the back.

I went even less $. I cut out the rear reso and the muffler and clamped on a thrush welded.dumped before the rear axle, and reused some of the old pipe. It sounds pretty good for the 3.7

  1. Cut resonator(s), and replace with straight pipe.
  2. Cut out muffler, and replace with one that produces a sweet tone. (Magnaflow #12256 was my choice.)
  3. Add a nice tip for decoration. (Magnaflow #35204 was my choice.)
  4. Fill up with gas, & enjoy your new sound. Repeat as necessary.
Here is a thread with some sound clips.

I cut out the muffler and left both resonators this is cheap because its just a straight piece of pipe. My last 4.7 i did what the others recomended and put a flowmaster in with no resonators this sounded the best. I love the sound of a flowmaster as long as it does not drone.

A word of caution here. The lubricant in your rear axle will break down more quickly with all of that heat from your exhaust being thrown directly at it. IMHO, I would recommend more frequent lube changes or, better yet, get that hot exhaust away from the underside of your truck.

No CEL, the resonators and muffler are only there to reduce noise.
