Cheese, you should not have to pull the carrier out to replace the spider gears. There is a cross pin that has a retaining bolt, pull this out. Two of the spider gears will come out. To get the other two, you need to remove the c-clips. I'm almost certain you need to un-bolt the axle by removing the 4 bolts behind the brake drums to get the c-clips out. I'm not a diff expert by any means. I would reference your Chilton's manual.

Look and Randy's Ring and Pinion for parts. I think they have the best deals.

Or, you can use this opportunity to do a gear swap...

When I was looking for a rear axle for another project one of the guys at the auto wreckers said to check the spiders carefully on the gen3 Dakota axles as MOST that he sees are missing teeth.
I checked mine right away but they were good.
No idea how long they will last with the Cummins in front of them :<(

I would just replace the spiders with ones made in China. That has to be where the factory ones come from since they are junk! No seriously just replace the spiders, and while in it the pinion seal since they all like to leak as well. It is a fairly easy repair.
