new door - LOCKING MECHANISM not triggering lock...PICTURES
Hey all
just finally got my door back from being painted...250$! and i payed $500 for it from a yard.....hoping to get a 100 back when i bring my old door in..
I'M having trouble getting the door locking mechanism to work...under the panel..im hooking it up right to the door handle/leverr but when I pull the handle its not doing anything to pop the lock up.
but even when i pull the green one with my hand manually its not effecting the red one to pull the lock up..
i may have to dig deeper and maybe take the mechanism off my old door.
i really want to put this door on because its been months ive been goin around with a mangled up door... now when im ready to put it on this is happening! i don't want to go around with a door that wont lock or open...or better yet that will fly open while im driving!
anyone have experience with the locking mechanisms on car/truckdoors? care to share any thing?
thanks!

well i dont think its the wires...its the manual trigger thats not working..like i pull the inside handle after i hook everything up and its not triggering the mechanism to unlock....i guess maybe once i hook it up the electric lock function may work to trigger the mechanism..hmmm either way i guess whoever is in theback will be trapped in there side!
Just take a look at your old door, and see how its all linked together, something could have come unclipped around the Latch.
We had 2 Vans at work that part of the rods where kinda Z shaped and would straighten some and stop working.

As Reject mentioned, use the old door as a guide. Other options are to use the other door (take the panel and plastic off so you can see what goes where), or download the service manual offered on this site - Chapter 23 in volume 2 covers the door assembly and gives you details on how to remove & install the door & parts of it. I haven't taken a Dakota door apart, but most door mechanisms operate on very similar principles and aren't hard to figure out, but you need to be able to see all the interconnects. If it's a manual door, it's all a matter of having the rods connected & clipped into the right holes. If it's an electrically operated door, you need the mechanical part working and then you need to have the solenoid hooked up properly (chapter 8 in volume 1 of the service manual gives you the wiring diagrams and descriptions). If the solenoid isn't working, you need to see if it gets an activation voltage from the truck harness to the door.
If all the parts worked on your old door, don't take it back until you have the new door working - you may need some of your old parts. On some doors, you need to remove the window and winding mechanism to get to parts of the locking mechanism, so the manual can be useful here in terms of giving you a detailed removal procedure. When you're finished, put the non-functional parts back into your old door before you return it to the salvage yard for your rebate.

it does have a child safety lock. it seems to be jammed up at the moment though it wont flick bakc and forth..im going to try and hook it up and try the electrical...
