Default rough idle

I've had my 2005 Dakota with 4.7 litre motor for five years and the whole time it has had a rough idle problem. I've changed the Idle Stabilization Valve to no effect. Before I start chasing my tail does anyone have anything to suggest? The car has 65k miles on it and still has original plugs, does not sit for extended period of times and gets regular service. From what I've read on the "net", this is not an unusual issue.

It may be time to change those plugs, or try cleaning your throttle body.

I put a lot of cleaner through the TB when I replaced the ISV and I've been thinking about the plugs for some time. I guess it's time. I've been working on my '87 Porsche 944 and chasing a lot of little issues (typical) just for fun.

Definitely time for new plugs. I believe you are supposed to replace them every 30k or so. Don't do platinums. Most copper units (and maybe iridium if you want to spend the $$$) will work. NGK and Champion seem to work quite well.

I have never heard of an "idle stabilization valve", but if everything is clean, replace the plugs. Standard copper core. These trucks dont like exotic (platinum, iridium, etc) plugs.

I had a sporadic high idle issue a few months ago so I cleaned the intake butterfly and the IAC valve because it was really dirty this solved my issue. I also agree that plugs could be your culprit. I also run dry gas or seafoam through a full tank of gas a few times a year to get any moisture in the fuel tank out and clean the injectors.

First I'd like to thank you all for your comments and recommendations. I replaced the plugs with NGK #6987 plugs gapped at .045. The ones I removed were original ones and were Champions and the gaps were pretty worn and at about .055 to .060. Reading the plugs, they appeared clean and barely tanned on the insulator. Problem is that the rough idle hasn't gone away and now that's 2 things I've tried: plugs and new IAC valve plus cleaning of the throttle body. I guess I'll drive over to the Dealership and have them read the codes and see if there's anything they can come up with. I've read that there was a software glitch in the ECU that was a problem but I haven't gotten much from Dodge about that.

Anyone else have any additional info, feel free to jump in here.

Try and disconnect the battery to reset the PCM. Your computer needs to adjust to plugs with the correct gap. Hopefully it will help.
