Default no gears not even park

i have a 2005 dakota awd with 120000 miles drove to town 6 miles noticed a couple hard down shifts, on way back home lost all gears suddenly no slipping nothing unusual at all, when it first stopped moveing was smokeing a little from underneath smelled like burning plastic or rubber, lasted just a min then stopped smelling and smokeing but has a growling sound comeing from where the torque converter is that continues to growel a few seconds after the engine is turned off, any ideas ? i havent a clue on these new ones.

Welcome to DF! Have you checked the dipstick? Does it have fluid in it? What does it look/smell like? Have you looked under the truck? Any leaks? Check engine light on? Have you ever serviced the transmission? Recommended service interval is 60k miles. Sounds like your trans is toast, but do some of these basic checks yourself and report back.

Does you truck have a transfer case? Because if it does, the transfer case maybe in neutral or the rod to the park paw broke. I would recommend a tear down and inspect.

all the fluids are good no leaks no problems until then just all of a sudden nothing , it will not even go into park shifter will but it still rolls, had thought maybe torque converter since thats where the noise comes from when you shut the engine off but i dont know.

Is the transfer case in neutral? Because if it is, your transmission will not lock into park and hold. The problem maybe the transfer case and not the transmission.
