Default Tranny solenoid pack replacement

Sorry for the rapid fire posts but when it rains it pours, last problem with the truck for now. A few months ago while driving at normal highway speeds the truck suddenly downshifted hard and threw the CEL on and the tranny wouldn't shift except for maybe 2nd-3rd until I pulled over and restarted it. Then it went back to normal for about a half an hour and did it again and it's essentially been doing the same ever since, the CEL will stay on for like 3-4 starts then go off and then it will shift hard again and the cycle repeats. I had the code read, can't find the exact code now but it was 2 codes, both transmission related, one was a generic tranny code and the other referred to one of the solenoids. I researched the specific code at the time and everyone was saying that you just had to replace the entire solenoid pack. Does anyone have any experience doing that or have a write up on it? Seems pretty straight forward, drain and drop the pan, pull the valve body and just swap out the solenoid pack but I'd like to hear from someone who has first hand experience doing it before I try it myself. Also while I'm down there I'm sure I'll change out the filter and fluid, has anyone ever tried one of the valve body shift kit upgrades? Seems like a logical thing to do while I've got it out.

Thanks again,

JR

Have a similar problem with my designation 545 RFE transmission that pops up every two or three months. Mine is caused by a failing solenoid that regulates the line pressure. Problem is that solenoid is sold ONLY in a $300 solenoid pack. I'd advise having the dealership work on it because of the severity. If they can trace the problem down and get JUST the required solenoid it might be cheaper for once. Unless of course you want to try repairing the solenoid. No idea about the shift kit though.
