Unhappy loose gas cap code showing up again and check engine light

Its come back again. I made a thread a few weeks back, and found out it might just be the gas cap so went to Napa, but it doesn't feel like it sits tight ( when I take it off it doesn't feel tight like the old one did ).

My question is should I go to the stealier ship and buy one or try some where else

I used to get that code on my truck, it would say gascap on the digital odometer. It was still under warranty at the time so the dealer changed the gas cap. The code came back a week or two later so I went back to the dealer. So then they looked at the whole fuel system for a small leak. They did a smoke test and didn't find anything but the tech did say he tightened up a hose clamp in the engine compartment and the code hasn't come back. And that was about 10 months ago. Sorry I don't know which clamp it was.

If you download the service manual listed in the sticky on this forum, you'll be able to see what's involved in the evaporative system - any leak in that will give you the same dashboard indication. I'm not sure if there are any other codes associated with that that could be stored on the computer, but I would find a code reader/diagnostic tool to plug in and see exactly what's stored there in terms of codes. Sometimes you can get lucky and the code can narrow down your repair choices if it's a failed or malfunctioning component. If it's something like a hose clamp or leaky hose, you probably won't get much better than "loose gascap".

The manual will give you the component layout for all the parts you'll need to check out for leaks.

That's a pretty large file to download on a phone, hope you have an unlimited data plan

Not very easy to navigate through a multi thousand page document on the phone either.

I have been having the same problem with mine, so I bought a code reader for less than the cost of one trip to the stealership. I read the codes last night and got the following codes. Explanations are from the code reader manufacturer website (Actron).

PO457-Evaporative System Loose Fuel Cap
PO456-Evaporative Emission System-Small Leak
PO-0440-General Evaporative System Malfunction
