My 3.7 has this same annoyance.. After searching the forums, I came to the conclusion that it is a fairly common issue....

Even ran across one thread where the member had replaced rocker arms and lash adjusters (Read lifters) to no avail. The problem persisted.

I'm wondering if the factory didn't bore a couple of the holes for the lash adjusters a touch too deep.

5W-30 is NOT oil, its water. if your winter temp stays above -10 F try valvoline premium blue diesel 15W-40. my V6 3.9 likes it. when the air temp over nite is 10 F to -10 F it will turn slow. your starting system best be in tip top shape. but thats REAL oil. IMHO.

If you need to use 15W40 in an engine that the manual calls for 5W30 then your engine is getting pretty long in the tooth.

Not sure if everybody is talking about the same noise; lifter, piston, rocker, valve. In may case I think they call it valve "chatter". It is a rapid clicking sound that goes away within seconds. And that is in cold weather. Seems like that is the time it takes for the oil to flow. Am i right?

Same noise Dak, just longer duration. Little lifter rattle for a couple seconds on cold start would be considered normal.

This annoyance can go anywhere from one to three min. depending on how cold it is outside. On mine, the affected lifter sounds to be on the #2cyl. Best guess with stethoscope would be intake. Go figure it would be on the side with the most BS in the way to get the valve cover off..

I do not think your filter would be the problem at all. However, with your mileage there are high mileage oils. I would also suggest no more than 10w30 in -25 *winter... 15w 40 would be ok in summer.

In the newer engines, the tolerances are supposedly so fine that using a different weight oil than what is called for can cause damage.

In the older 3.9L V6 and 5.2/5.9L V8s, they seem to handle the different weights without issue. However, the newer 3.6/3.7/4.7/5.7 Hemi/6.4L Hemi engines supposedly don't take anything but the factory recommended weight well at all.

idk its getting kind of annoying to have to warm it up every day. im going to take off the valve covers when it gets nice out which will be hopefully in the next couple of weeks and see whats up. hopefully its just the lifters as they are a cheap and easy thing to fix. im going to check my plugs as well as i baught the truck at 150000 and i bet they have never been changed by the fact as my milage is 10mpg
