Default lifter noise at startup

my 05 dakota quad cab 4.7 165000km has lifter noise at startup which goes away after about 2min which being told by dodge at 3 other shops is normal for this engine. i run quakerstate 5w30 oil and i put on a napa gold filter. when i changed the oil 2000km ago the noise was non excistant then after about a week it came back. any one know of a oil combo that works for this engine. i got the oil pressure tested and it was in normal limits 90psi at startup then 40 at idle. the range for this engine is huge said the dodge dealer but he said it was fine as it was parked outside in -25 weather.

I get the same noise. Almost sounds like a diesel's "tick tick tick tick tick" until it warms up. Haven't figured it out, either.

I don't think 4.7 engines have lifters. Overhead cam, you know. The rocker rides right on the cam. "Lifter" noise isn't a bad thing. It means that there's some extra valve lash. Tight valves (quiet ones) tend to burn--especially exhaust valves.

I wouldn't worry about it. Are you using the correct, specified oil viscosity? You might look into having the valve clearances adjusted.

I think all 4.7's tick. Mine did, I switched to a different synthetic and it quieted it down considerably. Lots of threads on the subject if you search.

try a diff filter. i like Purolator filters. Wix is said to be good. Fram CAN make good filters but they DONT for the mass market. IMHO.

What about a motorcraft filter (yes I know its ford) what about the mopar ones I can get at Walmart fairly cheap? What is the best filter for our truck? I haven't Changed its Oild for 2 years (its been parked 99.99% of the time and I'm fixing it up) btw, mines A 3.7, sometimes has a slight noise.

If I ran midgrade or premium gas, would it help?

At one time I had a Ford 1/2 ton w/a 302 in it. W/about 50-60,00 miles on it it developed a tic on start up, automotive machine shop friend said it was piston slap, cold pistons, as soon as they warm up a bit, expand, tic goes away, don't worry about it.
I wasn't happy w/that so I dropped the pan, replaced the rod bearings with .001" oversize, buttoned it up and tic was gone, never to be heard again.

That actually sounds like mine. Goes away once it warms up.

I started it up with a stethiscope and it is the hydraulic lifters. I sound like a diesel upon startup and cant just get in a go when the weather is so nice. I believe its got to be something with the lifters as when thw oil starts to get a bit dirty is when the sound comes back. ive tried wix, ****ty oil change kind, and mobile one with no avail. tried thinner oil. and my last oil change I tried adding lucas oil oil stuff which im pretty sure is just 140 90 gear oil. still nothing. im going to put in all mew lifters I think this summer whwn I change my plugs. just got to find a how to on the sohc engine
