Default Synthetic Oil Issues

Hi guys got a 09 Dakota with the 4.7L 55,000Kms

Issue is,

I have recently put 5w20 Synthetic oil in my truck in January. Filled it up to half way on the "safe" hashmarks on the dipstick. I just checked my oil today and it is just below the "safe" hashmarks.

Is it burning it? I have never had this issue while using conventional oil.

Anyone else experience this before?

My truck calls for 5W-30, have always used Mobil-1 synthetic since the first change, never burned oil so far at 92,000 miles.

My 05 Quadcab 4.7 uses about 1 1/2 to 2 quarts between oil changes Chrysler corp says its within factory spec at that rate. Or 1 quart every 1000 or so miles is supposed to be ok according to them . truck now has 203976 miles and always the same oil consumption between changes hope this helps. I only use Mobil 1 full synthetic 5w 30 and Mopar filter

Sydeshow,

As per your owner's manual, 5W-20 (SAE Grade) is recommended for your engine. Have you always monitored your oil consumption in the past? How many km's have you driven since your oil change in January?

When you did the oil change initially, did you also change the filter? Did you pre-fill the filter or at least start the truck after the oil and filter change and let it circulate for a few minutes before checking the oil level? How much oil did you add? IIRC, the 4.7 takes 6 qts.?

If you just changed the filter, added oil and checked the level without starting the engine, it would read higher. Then lower after starting and driving as the filter fills up.

After I do an oil and filter change, I always start the engine and let it run for a minute or two to circulate, shut it off, let it sit for another minute or two to drain back into the oil pan, then check the level.

You did not state if you did this, so one can only assume.....

Damn 1 1/2-2qts is within spec?
That's nuts, never had a vehicle on conventional oil use more then 1/4qt between changes unless there was something wrong with it. Many of which were well over 200k before they even started using that.

I agree with jkeaton,
did you let it run after your change and check it again?

Also, keep in mind thermal dynamics. Cold oil will register lower on the dipstick than hot oil. Of course, with engine oil this is much less than, say, transmission oil.

I firmly agree with the statements above. When I do my oil changes, I run it for 5 minutes and recheck the oil level...a week later I'll check it again. Sometimes, I've had to add an extra 1/2 quart after 5 minutes, sometimes a week later I'll have to add it, sometimes I don't have to add any at all. It can also depend on how warm the oil/engine was at the time of change and if you let it drain for a long time so every little drop of old oil that can come out does.

*** On a side note... I was religious in always using Mobil 1 5w30 full synthetic. Recently (2 oil changes ago @ 150,000 miles) I started using Royal Purple 5w30 ... Maybe it's just a placebo effect of using a more premium oil that costs a little more, but I swear that she is running smoother and it feels like I free'd up a few ponies. Girlfriends car uses 5w30 also...plus, we can get discounts at Walmart and a few autostores, so I try to plan ahead and buy Royal Purple when I can get a discount, coupon, etc. In the end, it costs maybe $5.00 more than Mobil 1 to do the oil change, so I think I'm up-sold permanently... Unless, any of you have any experience with Royal Purple that makes you not like it or think it's worth the few extra dollars... Just my opinion.
