topper install issues...need answers
I'm trying to put a used 06 topper on my 2008 quad cab. I have the bedrail caps and tailgate lipped cap. The topper fits except the door won't shut completely and latch because of the tailgate cap. Is there another type of tailgate cap available that doesn't have the lip and fits the contour of the tailgate?? Is there a simple solution?
^^^ That.
You have the tailgate cover that hangs out an inch or two. Remove it and get one that sits flush on the tailgate.
See how mine sits below...

The topper fits the truck, it's for a gen3 Dakota. The issue is the rear door of the topper striking the plastic cap on the tailgate before the door shuts completely. The truck has the bed rail caps along the side rails so the tailgate and side rails are all level along the top.

My tailgate cover bolts on inside and outside of the bed. Removing the cover exposes 4 holes on the outside.
I bought the topper used. The guy has a few toppers on a lot. He showed up to help load it. It fit the contour of the bed so I paid, he left. I clamped it down, then when closing I saw the issue. I'd never thought of there being any difference in toppers that fit gen3 trucks.

I had a factory slide-in box liner and a wrap-over tailgate cover when I bought my truck. I wanted a spray-in liner, so the tailgate cover had to come off. There were four square holes in the top of the tailgate where the fasteners pressed in that they covered over with a filler material and then sprayed the liner over top. Worked fine, so maybe that is what you need to do.
Note that my sig pic is my "old" '06 truck, my "new" truck is an '08 with a cap.
