Default Dakota problems... and specific front driveshaft question.

Hey guys, haven't posted in a while... Dakota still kicking @ 170k (i don't drive it much anymore and may be why it's falling apart ask at once) but not without some issues. Uses some oil between changes, typical beside rust is getting away from me, water pump is leaking and the power steering pump is going out. 4wd transfer case motor has a mind of its own. The switch works but it also tries to lock in whenever it feels like it randomly.

aside from all of that, I have a real grinding metal on metal sound that intermittently happens from under bath, I was thinking a cv joint, but everything "looks" ok. I did find this where the front shaft goes into the transfer case.... It may be the way it's made, but something seems off to me... Can anyone tell me if this looks normal where the front shaft connects to the transfer case? Thanks guys!

Think I would try turning things by hand, and see if you can feel anything.....

Shaft looks typical. Grab and shake it. See how it feels.

No, that is not normal. That is a CV and it is definitely toast. Dorman makes kits for repairing/replacing the CV end without having to buy a whole new shaft. I just did mine recently, here are a few pictures of the kit and job done here. There are a couple of youtube videos on how to do it.
This kit for mine was 932-303. Use the Dorman site to verify which is the correct part number for your year truck. I purchased it off of Amazon for a much better deal than any of the autoparts stores were able to offer me.

Hope that helps!

Thank you for the info! I had never really paid attention, but I knew something didn't look right.

Worked like a charm, thanks for the help. After doing that, a water pump and fighting a new power steering pump... hopefully she's good to go for a day or two!

Just replaced the rear joint in front drive shaft of my Wife's 02 Jeep Liberty. Easy Peasy. (Same setup). Only one store around here sold a repair kits (joint) at $150+. All others were whole shaft only. Naaa.
Auto Parts Direct To You on Amazon had the parts. Looks like good quality joint. We'll see. Will update. But for $50 ? All day long.
Hope this helps somebody.
