Hi folks, Well I didn't think I would have a problem this soon but anyway. I have a 2006 Dodge Dakota (3.7 liter V6) and the check engine light came on while I was accelerating. I noticed that the tranny went into a "Limp mode", the engine revved but I was doing about 20mph. My basic code reader says " P0700 07E8 Transmission Control System (MIL request). The previous owner said the light came on once before and he was told it was a communication problem with the computer. So, let me ask, the TCM is the same as the ECM or are they 2 different computers and secondly, would replacing the ECM fix the issue? Thanks gang.

 

It's 12 years old. Why would you think that that is too soon for a problem? Search the forum for P0700 and, magically, the answer you seek will be revealed.

I see I failed to mention that the truck is new to me, I've had it about 3 days and the check engine light came on, referring to the P0700 code. I bought it as a 2nd vehicle just for some utility purposes. The previous owner states that it happened once before and the problem was the ECM itself. I may just order a refurbed one, specific to my VIN. Thank you for your response.

 

Very carefully check for signs of corrosion at the module terminal pins and all grounds and battery terminals are clean and tight and the battery is load tested and in top shape.Dakota can bus is very sensitive to battery condition.Try the easy stuff first.

 

Thank you, I didn't realize that the battery can have such an impact on this issue. The terminals were tight, minimal corrosion but I haven't had it load tested. I haven't checked it's water level either......Thanks again.

 

So, now I'm told by a shop that is checking out my truck that the tranny is slipping which indicates a mechanical issue instead of anything electronic. They quoted a price of $3000. to rebuild it with a tranny from Jameson. I still wonder if something else could be a much less expensive answer. Any thought or suggestions? THank you.

 

Yeah, they would say that....... I bet that shop wasn't a dealership, was it.

I think I would try the electronics first, and do it myself, before dropping another 3 grand on a vehicle you just bought, that may not fix the actual problem......

I have tossed this back and forth, unfortunately there is that fear that I could be dragged over the coals with what they are recommending. I have thought about replacing the ECM and going from there. Thanks for the suggestion.
