Question Code P0344 - Throttle Position Sensor or Camshaft Position Sensor??

Hi Everyone -

I have an interesting problem. My '06 Dakota (3.7 L V6) threw a P0344 code and it was identified as "Throttle Position Sensor Signal Intermittent". Ok, fine, no big deal. When I double check the code in the factory manual AND the Haynes manual it is identified as a camshaft position sensor issue. Either way the repair is fairly straightforward, but which one do I believe? The TPS was identified by 3 different code readers, but the manuals INSIST that it is the CMP...

FYI: I double-checked the code lists in both books and there isn't a DTC listed for the TPS at all - which adds to the confusion.

I'm stumped. Any advice is appreciated.

Even though 3 different code readers identify it as the throttle position sensor?

Yup. Wouldn't be surprised if the folks that make the readers, all get their code from the same place..... (code that runs the reader, that is.)

I would be far more likely to trust the factory service manual.......

Thanks for the help. I did some additional searching and thought about how the truck is behaving lately and I'm beginning to believe it might also be the crank sensor even though no DTC comes up for it. I guess I know what's on my plate this weekend... God I hate diagnostic work...

Sluggish acceleration and periodic trouble holding speed. If it IS the CMP, will I have to flash the ECM?

No. I would reset it though. (just leave the battery disconnected while you change the sensor.)

Great! Thanks a lot - my experience in auto repair is limited and that's why I always try to get the FSM for every vehicle I own, but sometimes they don't answer ALL the questions. You've been a great help.
