Default Nebraska Dakota: Rims & Tires

I'd like to get 285/70/17 (32.7 x 11.2 x 17) tires. Although I am not quite sure what the definition of "serious trimming" is. We're not talking "cut off a piece of the bumper" are we?

Need assistance on which is the correct 17x9 wheel from this list to get for said tire (2005 Dakota SLT 4x4 4.7L).

Will be installing 1.5" leveling kit.

EDIT: Ok, I think I have the correct wheel part#XD82279086712N as this has Bolt Pattern=139.70mm and -12 offset. If this information is in error, just comment below that I need to fix something. In other words, no replies by other posters = I have the correct wheel part#.

If you get a 17x9 wheel, with those 285 tires, and a -12 offset, you're gonna slice and cut your Dakota up pretty good. It's tough to say exactly how much will need to go.

Read this thread, same size tire basically, but on 16x7 wheels, with a +25 offset, which is a lot of extra cutting with your low offset wheel choice.

Thank you for your candor, it is definitely informative. I have decided to ~try~ going with a 275/70R17 like bonecollector 3 did in this post. Only problem is, I don't know his rim width or his offset value.

I'd like to nail down what I need to do, rim wise, in order to run some 275/70R17's. In case I should get some funds distributed to my account.

Here is the original tire thread from bonecollector 3, 17x8 wheels, offset unknown.

Try and find a 8" wide wheel with an offset of +18 for your least amount of cutting.

Ok, I'd say I'm 90% committed to buying the wheel specs you recommend. I'm wondering, with full knowledge that I might be causing myself issues with fitment, how a 17x9, +25 offset would work. I'm fully aware that I possibly do not know what I'm talking about with regard to offset for a 17x9 rim. If I may, I would like to prod you for your thoughts on that size/offset. Or anyone can check in if they want.

Well, I had 20"x9" wheels, with an offset of +19 on my truck at one time, with 285/50/20 tires. When at full turn, I would rub the front sway bar and frame with the tire, not ideal, but not a huge deal. With a 9" wide wheel and a +25 offset, and the 275 tire, you'd probably do the same. But keep in mind, a 275/70/17 tire is recommended to be mounted on a wheel 7" to 8.5" wide, not a 9" wide wheel. And I never really understood the 'I gotta stuff every possible area of my wheel well with tire' philosophy, but that's just me. I have 265/70/17 tires, and think that's a perfect size for our truck with just a leveling kit.

Just as a reference, one site shows the following tires available in each size:
275/70/17 = 14 tires available.
265/70/17 = 246 tires available.

And it's easy to find a 265/70/17 spare tire, I found a spare off of a Dodge Ram for $50 on CL, it fits right underneath, and is available to me as a same size spare in case it's needed.

I've settled on the 265/70/17 tires. Your setup looks balanced with those tires/rims. I know you mentioned, at one point, that your 17x8' (25.44mm offset) rims are from a Dodge Ram 1500. I don't suppose you remember what year that Ram 1500 was? If you prefer not to disclose that info, that is certainly acceptable. I'll be installing a 1.5" leveling kit.

My wheels were from a 2001 Dodge Ram, with the Offroad Edition Package, I've always loved these wheels. I found a set locally in great condition with Winterforce tires with plenty of tread, and ran them (as pictured below) in the winter for a few years. But any 2nd Gen to current year (1994+) Ram 1500 wheels will fit, same exact wheel specs as our Gen Dakota. There are so many guys getting new Rams and upgrading their truck with lifts and tires, so the stock wheels are easily found for sale. I had them powder coated black when I ditched the chrome stuff, there are a few pics in this thread.
