Default A/T shift cable questions

So me shift cable broke on my 05 Dakota. I removed the broken cable and purchased a new cable. The cable has these plastic clips on it and I don’t know if I slide clips in place before or after the install. Also do I slide clips in place before or after I make sure cable cycles through gears (PRND21)? Please help!!!

You should still be able to download the factory service manual at the link contained in the first "sticky" thread at the top of the forum, titled "Free, Immediate 2005 Dakota FSM and Dodge Build Sheet, and more...". The service manual should describe the install procedure.
