Unhappy Did i kill it?

2005 V6 4x4 auto trans 92K miles

Engaged 4x4 low, and began pulling in reverse, another truck uphill about 15 feet.

Sudden clanky noise like some parts had come loose.

Turned engine off. Turned back on and still clanky.

Any ideas about what broke?

I think you killed it with this post, you been on here for 4 years and your first post earns your screen name. Thats pretty cool.

So is this happening while the truck is moving, or at idle not moving?

Where is the clanking coming from? You do realize those hooks on the front are for you to be pulled out of something don't you? Your truck is designed to pull at the rear.

This happened while in reverse. Noise continued after going into park.

Clanking is coming from under the truck. I didn't let it continue running for concern of more damage.
Can't tell if it's engine, transmission, drive line, transfer case, etc.

If it's in park, that leaves out the t-case, and likely the trans as well......

So, I started it up and no clanking noise. It showed that the 4x4 low was engaged, but it wasn't. I switched it back and forth between 2 w and 4 hi and 4 lo and it finally clicked out of 4x4 mode. Lightly rev'd a couple of times and no clanky noises.
Then I backed up onto the drive pad and when the front tires hit the hump it was a bit of a struggle to get up and it make a clank, just one short clank, then no other noises.
Engine sounds good, which was my biggest concern.
So would it be a transfer case or transmission issue, or something else?
I want to have it checked out so that whatever it was doesn't come back or make things worse next time.
Thank you.
