Default I Increased Gas Milage from 17.9mpg to 22.3mpg

Just wanted to share my excitement with everyone. I was shooting to get better gas milage, but I didn't expect I could gain 4.4mpg! I got 373.3 miles on one tank of gas!I did drive about 30 miles or more with my low gas light on. Here's my mods:

Helpful Gas Saving Mods:
  • Hypertech 2000 Tuner
  • Reduced to 3.55 Ring and Pinion
  • Gibson cat back dual exhaust
  • K&N Drop in filter
Unhelpful Gas Saving Mods:
  • Increased tire & wheel size
  • 3" lift
Here's the data from my OBD Fusion app:

Using cruise control on Interstate. I always drive faster, but was almost out of gas. This data is an over all rating for the 2 days that I have been tracking milage on mixed highway, city, and windy hilly back roads. Always exceeding the speed limit. I'm not a hyper cruiser.

22.3 total miles per gallon when I stopped to get gas.

I got 373.3 miles on one tank of gas. I did drive about 30 miles or more with the low gas light on.

What gear ratio did you initially have on your truck, I ask because I have the 3.92.

Default Best ever was 22.9

My best ever was 22.9 headed from ATL to New Orleans. I remember this one as I was actually trying to see how high I could get it and it was a struggle to get there. This is on a 2011 quad cab, 2WD, 3.92 gear on factory 265-60R18 tires at the time.

It had a Bully Dog tuner running 93 octane and about a 1.5" front, 2.5" rear drop. I drove the whole trip running 60-65 tucking behind big trucks whenever possible.

Today I have a 4.56 gear with a 285-50R20 tire and am lucky to get 20mpg in the same scenario. It averages 17-18 on the interstate now but that is also running at 70+.

Don't trust those readouts either. Divide how much gas you filled up with into that distance. Guessing closer to 18mpg if you topped up 20 gals into those 373 miles.

Computer readouts aren't accurate and tuning makes them more inaccurate. You need to hand calculate your mileage to see what it actually is.

Different gear ratio & tires, I'd have to think speedometer/odometer accuracy could be compromised. Maybe try using a gps to calculate miles just to verify? If you did get that much out of a tank, that is excellent.

That's really excellent milage. I would like to see what milage that I could get on a long interstate trip. As far as my average, my low gas light comes on somewhere between use of 16-17 gallons. So I still have 3-4 gallons at that time. I didn't do a complete fill up when I gased up due to the cost of gas at the station.

The new ratio and tire size was inputed into the programer when I programmed. Prior to programing , my hand calculated miles were under 16mpg, which all the ratios were off at that time. I would have to say that I can tell a significant difference in the power that my truck produces and it just plain runs better. It even sounded different at the first key turn. On flat interstate, I can run 80mph at 2000 rpms. The Hylertech 2000 is definitely worth the money in my opinion.

Those are great numbers. You'll get even better mileage if you can find a gas station that offers ethanol-free gas. I was hitting 425-435 mpg last fall with my 4.7 while making some trips out of state and filling up on ethanol-free.

My car has been broke down, so been using the Dakota on a couple long distance trips. Reminded me again how much our small tank sucks. I found myself filling up around the 300 mark.... vs my car where I fill up around the 600 mile mark.

Has anyone figured out a way to mount a bigger tank yet?
