Default 2005 #3 coil split

I have a 2005 3.7 4wd. This is a long story of how I got to the split coil. This truck belongs to my son, the transmission went into limp mode. A friend of his wife worked on it and said it need a pcm. I bought a rebuilt one off ebay. They installed it and said something started smoking under the hood. Transmission still in limp mode. I finally got it home where I could check things out. I got a code that said # 3 coil was bad. It was in bad shape burned up. Replaced it and cranked it up and it ran great for about 5 minutes. Coil started smoking and it split down the middle. I took it to a shop and he said it needed a tune up. So he replaced all coils and plugs. Ran good for 10 minutes and then it burned the #3 coil up. The mechanic said it had to be the computer and they are vin specific and had to be programed by dodge? He also said that it was not showing a bad coil code....HELP

That is strange. Something has to be going on with that coil circuit. I'd check the wiring, maybe trace it out in the harness. I could see those wires getting damaged, the loom has turned to dust on mine. The computer does control the firing of the coils, I guess if something is going on there it could burn it also.

I talked to the mechanic again and he said the coil was being energized all the time, that is why it is burning it up. Can anyone tell me which wires at the computer to check with the wires on # 3 coil. He says he still thinks its the computer. He is really busy and behind and says the computer from dodge will cost more than the truck is worth. I have to much money in it to junk if I don't have too. Thanks

Per the 2005 Service Manual for the #3 coil, there are 2 wires:

-Dark Blue/Orange - Control Circuit (from the PCM) - This one should only be energized during the spark signal from PCM.
-Red - Full-time power from the Integrated Power Module (fuse block)

So far i've been through 3 coils, and I have changed spark plugs. I'm about ready to get a new ECU and try that. I found some from a couple companies that are around 200$ USD suposed to be programmed for your VIN# by them before they ship it out. I made another post about that in this forum.

I did a search, see a few Ram owners have had this issue and the ECU replacement being their solution. New one on me. Hope you guys get it sorted.
