program a new computer with out dealer?
I'm leaning towards my ECU being bad with my cyc 1 missfire and coil#1 short, i've found two retailers on line that will ship a refurbed and programmed to your VIN ecu for about 200USD $. These guys

Both show good ratings on google reviews, but one the second one there where quite a few 1 and 2 star revies thrown into the mix of 4 and 5 stars.. have not read the reviews for the first one yet.
I then found this video
I looked up the tool hes using its 2000USD on amazon. I'm wondering, (and still researching) can this be done with a say a laptop, bluetooth, and an BT ODB2 interface? I mean if all it takes is just putting in the vin# and entering the correct milage, surely some one makes a cheaper software that can do this? (I know in the video that guy went through three junkyard ecm units before finding one that worked.. but if those units and software to flash them are cheap enough it could be possibly worth it. I doubt it but ya never know.
did dodge really just cheap out this badly on these trucks? I feel like i bought a lemon.. I know its a 15 year old truck, but I've older vehicles with less problems.. (my wifes car, its 20 years old and has had nary a problem.) my old reliant k, 280K miles never had an issue other than normal wear items..

I just replyed to your other thread, didnt know you found this one. I talked a guy a repair shop and said dodge computers are pretty close to junk.. I'm probably going to order one tomorrow after I read a lot more of those reviews, and if it fixes it, I'm selling the truck. This will be at least the second ECU this truck has had, possibly the third because when I had the trans rebuilt they asked if I had every had the ECU replaced, it looked like a reman to them.. so yea I'm losing what little faith I had left in this truck..
The tools needed for a Vin change are a laptop running Windows 7, the oem software and a software compatible pass through device that is j2534 compliant. Access to the chrysler software through tech authority. Com starts at $1600 per year. The tools cost around $2000 and also need a subscription to use. There are cheaper alternative's like the mongoose pro ($500), but you still need to use the oem software. If you look hard enough you might find a working version of the cracked software to run without the subscription, but will still need to spend a at least a few hundred for the tools. The online retailers price is just low enough to make it worth buying the refurbed unit rather than taking the risk yourself.

You guys have to remember who owned Dodge when these trucks were built. Daimler Benz! Never should have purchased mine,
in a bad time and needed something to drive. Already bought a rebuilt PCM, saving up to get the all the wiring and other control modules checked for faults.

I got the new ECM and it did not help. Imediatly after plugging it in and starting up I got the same exact code for the same exact coil and it was again on a brand new coil. I then had an even worse thing happen, the engine made a weird weird sound (my son who was inside described it as sounding like a chain saw, but for me out side with the truck it sounded more high pitched and metallic) the engine just stopped, exhaust smoke was comming out from the passenger side of the engine but kinda low, so I dont know if I blew a head, some kind of gasket, exhaust manifold, or bend a rod, or what, but now it tries to turn over and then just dies. So yea, I have to have it towed to a repair shop now to get a proper idea of whats wrong with it. Then I'll determine if I want to junk it or put more money into it.. part of me hopes the engine is shot so I have an excuse to get a 4.7; H.O. and drop in there.
Sounds like you misdiagnosed it for a wiring issue with the #1 coil. Bummer, it happens. Hopefully the fix isnt super pricey, or you get to put in a HO. Good luck. If you do swap in a HO, be sure to either replace or inspect the wiring harness first.
yea I'll be paying some one for all that work lol. I aint got the tools or space to do that stuff (I have a drive way, not even a car port. just a drive way lol. and its not long enough to utilize for more than oil change).
One good thing about the ECM I can send the new(remaned) one back and get my money back. they have a 60 day return policy so I'm only out the 20 bucks for shipping.
