Default 3rd Gen, 2006 Dakota, RW ABS module VIN matching?

Hi all, I've done my best to scrub the forums looking for answers to some of these questions, but have not had much luck.

We encountered the dash ABS/Parking light combo on our 2006 Dakota. It's a 3.7L, RWD with rear wheel ABS. We replaced the speed sensor on the rear differential and even cleaned out the differential (lots of metal dust in there on the magnet).

Could not get these 2 lights to go off after many key cycles and even driving it for a little. We replaced the master cylinder and adjusted the vacuum booster to specs. It brakes well and does not feel squishy.

We assumed the RW ABS pump was bad, it sits under the battery and drives the rear wheels. Long story short, the pump was removed and it's now long gone.

We'd like to find a donor truck and purchase the pump, there are many available on eBay, but from posts I've read, the VIN is programmed into ABS pump and must match the VIN in the ECU/ECM/PCM, otherwise the dash lights will remain on, even after replacement?

Is this true? If so, can we find a donor vehicle with the same engine and specs and use that ABS pump and ECU/ECM/PCM? Will we require any other modules from the donor vehicle to get back up and running? There are various shops that offer ECU/ECM/PCM programming, but was not aware of any places that reprogram the ABS pump? Based on some of the component costs on eBay, it would seem grabbing all the parts from a donor vehicle would still be economical.

Any feedback would be appreciate, thanks!

Bump.

Any experts out there that know how all the modules interact?

I've not replaced mine, but I've had issues with CANbus communications and when it acts up I have received messages that the ABS couldn't verify the VIN.

Thanks for the info. I'm hoping someone can confirm what is needed to get the trucking running again. I don't want to drive it around with the dash ABS and brake light on, even though it appears to be driving fine.

If you replace the Antilock Brake Module, then the good old Scantool (Starscan) is necessary to reprogram it.

The ABM should be the only brake system part that would require programming, as far as I know.

Great! Thanks for the confirmation.

Do you think if we bought a PCM/ECU/ECM and ABS module from the same donor vehicle on eBay, that would do the trick? Would we have to replace any other modules in the vehicle?

Thanks again!!

I had to buy one at a pick a part yard. Just removed the electronics module from the new unit and swapped it out on my truck. No need to disconnect the brake lines. It is located under the power block behind the battery. I then used an Autel scanner to program it to my system. No more codes and working great for a couple of years now. Unfortunately, there are no new units available for our trucks.

Hi, thanks for the info.

Can you tell me the exact Autel scanner you used or one that is compatible? Can these be picked up for a couple of hundred or are they expensive?

Thanks!

Is there an inexpensive programmer to write the VIN to the ABS module? I'm guessing this scantool is pretty expensive?
