Relocating iat sensor
I have seen several posts suggesting relocating the iat sensor as close to the filter as possible to take advantage of the cooler air entering the tube thus resulting in increased performance and mpg. Makes perfect sense. My dumb question is this: since the stock wiring to the iat at that point allows little or no slack, do I simply splice in say, a 10" or 12 " length of common automotive wiring? Will doing so affect the accuracy of what the iat sends to the computer? What gauge wire?Looks like possibly 22ga. What do you use to plug the original hole? Thanks for the input.
what i did was splice my wires and went to home depot and got two 1 foot wires different color 14 gauge wire. to tell the difference. for istall purposes. bought the blue cyl. connectors in stead of the twist thumb ones (much nicer looking) and spliced in the iat sensor and installed it directly into the filter. with the k / n just simply remove the cone from the rubber gasket and place into filter that way you dont have to drill another hole. carefully put filter back on and tighten. with the amount of wire you should be able to route the wire under the tube and hide it from view. get a rubber plug and plug hole.
Let me see if I've got this right. After separating the filter cone from the rubber gasket, you placed the entire sensor assembly including that part that is normally outside the tube, connector and all, inside the filter cone,is that right? Isn't the sensor itself too delicate to be bouncing around inside the filter?
no the sensor is surronded by plastic when you tighten down the clamps the 14 gauge wire is stiff enough not to bounce. it actually flexes upwourd and sensor sits in middle of cone..plus if it does bounce around the filter is soft enough to help if sensor does bounce. it was just a quick fix at the time. now in the winter i will remove sensor from cone and install it back in the original tube hole.
Thanks for clearing that up, but I think I will go with a permanent relocation close to the filter by drilling an identical mounting hole and plugging the first. I just would rather not do the summer/winter swapping out. Plus I just can't get over the sensor being loose in the filter.
I went out to look at mine, cant understand why dodge put it right out side the throttle body. Has anyone emailed an engineer to ask their reasoning for this? Every car I have owned has been close to the air box. Seems the motor would get a false reading being around all the heat, or is the reasoning that it is getting the best indiacation of air tempature of the air coming into the throttle body? Anyway just courious...I am not a fan of relocating parts that are designed for a reason, but if it actully increases MPG that I will change mine too when I get a CAI. How about placing it half way? I dont want to do a summer/winter change, but dont think it gets crazy cold in Austin TX (just moved here so I really dont know).
Anyone got some pics on this mod? I'm interested, but I don't knwo what you guys are talking about. :-\

thats fine, but in connecticut it gets below zero and you need the sensor closer to the tb. frenchy if you changed your airbox only the sensor is still next to the tb. but if you changed the hole system then you would have had to remove the sensior from the unit that says either 4.7 magnun or 3.9 magnum on top of the box . by moving it down the tube it senses more cooler air than getting the reading right on top of the engine. better performance and mileage. just filled my tank went 362 miles and put 20.180 gallons in aver is about 18.0 miles to the gallon. thats with a heavy foot.
Just a thought, but how about this: drill the IDENTICAL hole close to the filter, insert the iat and temporarily plug the original hole, secure but removable. Then, depending on the climate in your part of the country, just before the cold weather starts setting in, swap out the iat and plug the new hole that you made. How simple is that? Then, in the spring, swap out again. Just have to splice in about a foot of 18ga-2wires. Opinions? Sound like a winner?
I have a K&N 63 series system, I have two little plug thingies still next to the TB however, I have one with a white plug on it, its RIGHT next to the TB. Like an inch away. Is this the sensor I am looking for?
