I believe Dodge uses that "hat" of an intake tube is to keep the flow of air quiet. It's a resonator of sorts. A muffler for your intake. I too see that outside air is getting into the airbox by way of that snorkel tube from the passenger fender. So, keeping with that, I added a K&N drop in filter and added an Airaid Modular Intake Tube (MIT), to replace the stock hat. Between that upgrade and the Flo 40 SO/DO exhaust, my truck has much better throttle response. Feels much quicker off the line. The exhaust really sounds like the engine is breathing well to. I think it's a great happy-medium to a full FIPK/CAI kit. And saved some $ from the full kit (which still gets it air from the engine compartment, I believe).

I've actually considered buying some conduit or PVC from one of the home inprovement places and running it from the opening in the fender to my right foglight space. Since I don't have foglights, and don't want them, I thought about cutting out the openings between the slats and and hooking the tube up as somewhat of a "RamAir" intake by having the air forced into the airbox when the truck is moving. This would definately send cooler air into the filter, or onto a CAI, and possibly increasing HP opportunity. The only drawback I've found is the space up at the fender opening seems narrower than the rest of the area.
I'm running a K&N drop in with a Airaid modular intake tube and using the factory exhaust with the muffler removed, resonators only, pretty happy with it,tried the K&N CAI # 63-1546 didn't like the way it ran,may try it again with some other mods.
i totaly got rid of the whole intake system and went with the k/n fipk. the hat over the tb on the dodge system is only for advertisement for the engine size. also with the k/n system you can relocate your iat sensor eaiser.

advertisement? Where do you come up with this stuff??.....It is called a Silencer for a reason....and a full CAI kit weather is be K&N or Airaid or another good brand does make a difference in flow volume putting in more air/fuel mixture and if you set it up right cooler air making this mix denser I mean it is simple physics very strait forward even I understand it.
