Default Hardwiring radar detector

Does anyone know a wire under the dash that I could tap into that would come on with the ignition? I'm thinking maybe the cigarrete ligther plug wire, but does anyone know of anything else?

I wouldn't mess with it. What's the big deal about plugging it into any power outlet?

it's just as easy to run a wire thru the firewall and tap into the fusebox under the hood. #21 or 22 I think is the switchable power for the dash mounted cigarette lighter. than just locate a ground under the dash

good luck

I don't want an ugly coiled wire hanging down my dash. Plus this way its a bit more concealed. I also am mounting it just above my rear view mirror, so I have to hardwire it if I want to put it up there.

Nice, thanks, thats what I needed to know. Now I just have to find out where the pass through is on the firewall.

Run the wire up under the headliner at the top of the window. Remove the driver side window pillar trim with handle. Tape the wire down along the pillar column and drop wire thru the dash side area. Reinstall the window pillar trim. route the wire outside the door area thru existing groument and them into engine compartment. There is no need to drill any holes to get into the engine compartment. See the photo were I routed wires for additional temperature gauges and my auto diming mirror.

plus I forgot to mention, I have mine mounted at the bottom corner of the dash/windshield, drivers side. This way, when someone I don't want to know is driving next to me, they can't see the lights on the detector. I generally have the radio turned up loud enough I never hear the stupid thing go off so I need the visual.

Have mine wired up to the cig lighter plug behind teh dash. Also have a master on/off switch so I can reach down to shut it off. Even with the detector mounted above the rear view, other people cant see the lights. Plus I pick up radar units nearly a mile away (Bel).

Cool Thanks. I had already ran the wire under the headliner and through the pillar column, so its just sitting in my truck waited to be routed from there. Thanks for the idea about the door, I'll check it out tomorrow, and hopefully finish it up.

Yeah, i got an escort passport 8500, and love it so far. Should be a lot better when its hardwired. How is yours mounted above the rear view? Suction cups?
