My o5 Dakota in the shop
By the way, to answer the original problem... Have your mechanic take a heat sensor laser gun and hit the exhaust before and after the cat. The exhaust should be hotter after the cat (make sure you run the motor nice and hard for a little while before you test the temps). If the temp is the same before and after the cat, the cat is bad. If it is hotter after the cat, the cat is fine. What kind of mechanics did you take your truck to?!? [sm=icon_beat.gif]

you guys should do what i do when these lights come on. put a businesscard over it on the dash. problem solved. i've never had a car/truck quit running or breakdown because of the check engine light. i think it's a gimmick for the stealership to get you in. if it covered under warranty they get paid. if it's not under warranty, they still get paid. 1 big damn conspiracy

I hope the buisness card you put infront of the light is for a mechanic and a towtruck

Apparantly you are too ignorant to realize we weren't being serious. If I were you though, ya, I'd keep that business card there. Don't worry about the CEL's. They are just like the low gas light, the low washer fluid light, the air bag light, etc. They are just there for show. And so you know they work, they really don't mean anything at all. Especially that Gas Light. If I were you I'd cover that up, as well as your gas gauge. Since apparantly those don't matter either.

actually, i do cover up most of my gauges. the only thing i need to see is the speedometer and the tach to know how fast i'm going and when to manually shift my auto for max torque and power. the only other thing i need to see is the odometer so i can track mileage. i always calculate my current gas levels by knowing a) how much fuel i put in and b) how many miles i've traveled since my last half fill up. i only fill up half way to keep weight down to improve a) mpg and b) power to weight. i've never trusted fuel gauges to be accurate. used to have a 78 CJ5 and did the same thing with it.oh, and i don't have a low washer level light in my DAK. that however, would be freaking awesome. i hate running out of washer fluid. rock on french man.

If its your cat that should still be under warranty. GM warranties their cats for 88,000 miles. If they don't warranty it, get the catless Y-Pipe from the earlier HO motor and get some downstream O2 sims. MUCH cheaper and you'll have more power to boot.
