Making a Double Din?
Does anyone know how to make a double din out of the 1 3/4" din in a 05 dakota. I realize that I may be trimming the bezel a bit. I just don't want a dvd/mp3 that comes out and covers the heat vents at the top. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Tim

go to a fiberglass shop and have them customize your dashboard to accept a player that can be lower than stock. Not sure how it would be mounted but at least you could work off of that, build a custom hinge to stick inside to allow you to mount it lower.
it has to do with stereo room they come in din/din and a half or double din. din is a single stereo din and a half would be stereo and maybe an equalizer and a doudle din would be stereo eq and maybe a video monitor. go to www.crutchfield.com and see various set ups for stereos

I say to do this... Pull out the bezel that the HVAC and radio are in. Pull off the Airbag lightand HVAC controls. sand the bezel down so you can lay a single layer of matt over the entire thing. after you resin it and sand it smooth, take a dremle and cut out (from the back, so you can see factory openings) the openings for the HVAC controls, airbag light and vents. now flip it over and outline the unit you plan to use. cut that out with a side cutting wheel. that takes care of thr opening. now we put it back on the dash and get out our sharpie. Mark anything that is sticking out in teh way of the radio through the hole you just made.
we are going to make a mounting braket for the DD unit. this is going to take either a dremle or air cut off tool... cut the things you just marked with the sharpie. cut them back far enough for the unit to slide all the way back so that its flush with your bezle. hopefully the unit comes with a mounting cage. we will be plastic welding that cage into the spot you just made. some more trimming may be needed to get it in there. you want it snug so dont trim too much. now measure where you need this cage to be and plastic weld it in place. (jb weld will probably work.) makes sure that you weld it so the unit can still slide into place and lock into the cage. I suggest welding in the 4 corners if possible.
then the rest is simply wireing it up. I would get everything wired before doing the dash work. maybe its just me, but thats what I would do.
