For guys who had dealer install hitch using OEM parts, how much did you pay?

I'd like a hitch for a bike rack, wondering if it makes sense to get a D with factory tow pkg if its not much more than the dealer installed hitch. Have no plans to actually tow anything, but tow pkg could add to resale down the road I guess.

Jtrees,
Dealer 1 wanted $605 when I was in the negotation stage before purchase.
Dealer 2 advised $500 but only charged me $250 when I purchased car.

This was the Mopar hitch and wire harness.

My dealer told me it was about $500 which I had him include in the deal so I'm not sure how close the price was. I did get the Mopar hitch and wiring module. It the same as a factory install when I compared it to a hitch that was factory installed.

Thank you both for the info. Even if the dealer hitch is Mopar, the factory tow package includes:
  • Class IV receiver hitch
  • 7 and 4 pin wiring harness
  • Heavy-duty cooling
  • Rear load leveling suspension
  • 220 amp alternator
  • Full-size spare tire
  • Steel spare wheel
For ~200 bucks more, it seems its better to get a factory tow pkg if possible.

Unless of course, they throw a dealer hitch in with the purchase.

The OEM Mopar hitch kit I saw for $250 online in case anyone was wondering.

The dealer I went to had every Durango, and Grand Cherokee with the tow package. The salesman told me that everyone one they order has it.

If one is going to tow anything over 4000lbs with the 6, then without a doubt, IMO, you should get the tow package for the extra cooling alone.

If one has a hemi, then they automatically already have extra cooling and 220amp alt so this is just redundant with the tow package. Unless that is the cooling is even MORE heavier duty.

Still, like you said, I agree, find one with the tow package just to get the load levelling and spare.

Bummer for those buying a used one down the road with a hitch and thinking they have the factory tow package.

So when they say "load leveling" is there air bags and a compressor that kick on when the truck senses a certain about of weight?

I read that the load levelling is not automatic like that. It's all internal to shock. As you drive and hit bumps, it will level out.

Another key thing on that dodge page and is typical of many brands is that they say UPTO 6200 (7200) lbs. I think base towing is only like 3500lbs. And you need the towing package (extra cooling) to get up to the higher ratings.

But I understand that a lot of people just want a hitch for a bike rack, small trailer, really small boat or jet ski and thus don't need the towing package.
