FYI, I'm commencing a stereo upgrade on the Alpine system -- amplifying the stock signal and replacing the factory sub with better unit, amplified in the stock enclosure. New crossovers will redo all signals to stock speakers, with more power and better processing for much improved sound and imaging. If this does not bring a good enough result, I will then replace speakers. I'll keep everyone informed for progress.

Ive always like alpine, always used them growing up. The headunit is the kenwood dx6980 its the second most high end unit kenwood has out right now, and im using its built in xovers. The highs and mids sound great right now just unimpressed with the sub, either is underpowered or not hooked up correctly to the HU. do you know what the stock sub is?

best thing to do is turn on the radio, and pic up the cargo cover and see if the sub is playing. Even with that cover off and the stock radio the sub is a HUGE difference. BAD design to put a sub below a thick plastic cover and not port it or anything.

there is no specific sub output on a factory radio. its on the output of the factory amp. Now if they bypassed the factory amp then you may not have it working. There are harnesses out there that should allow it to work.

ill have to have it checked out then. on the aftermarket headunit i maxed the subwoofer out put to 10 and listenend and then took it all the way to 0 and it was the same amount of NO sound coming from it so maybe they did bypass the factory amp. Hopefully thats the problem because i expected more from that system.

The sub control on the deck will have NO efect on the factory sub. that is meant for aftermarket amps and subs. for this to work you have to use the sub pre-out from the deck which is not being used.

To me it just makes sense when hooking up the aftermarket HU to connect the factory sub to the sub out thats what its used for, factory or not a sub is a sub?

Logically yes it makes sense, physically YOU CAN DO IT.

Your input to your factory amp only has f/l, f/r, r/l, and r/r speakers. the amp takes care of processing the sub (filtering out the frequencies of sound that are too low for the interior speakers and sending it to the sub).

If you replaced the factory amp with 1 sub amp and 1 amp for the other speakers in the car then the sub output would work. A factory amp is NOTHING like an aftermarket amp. There are no adjustments on a factroy amp like on aftermarket.
