Good Morning Everyone

I'm a new Dodge Durango owner. I've owned 3 Rams but decided to go SUV this time. I just purchased a 2012 Durango Crew and it's loaded with goodies. It had 28,000 miles on it but looks brand new and seems like it still had the new car smell. I absolutely love this vehicle.

But...I do have two questions for you folks. My engine light came on yesterday evening going home from work. Read the manual and it said it could be several different things including bad gas and to drive it several times to see if it goes off and then if not take it to dealer. Anyone have any suggestions what it could be? Is this common? All gauges check ok.

Also, it has the keyless push/stop button starting. My wife's key fob doesn't work with this so I assume it's not programmed like my fob. So I have to pull the button out each time she drives it so that she can stick the fob key into the ignition. Is there an easy way to get the button out and also anybody know about how much it would cost to get the key fob reprogrammed.

Thanks for any help.

David

Congratulations and welcome.

The CEL can be pulled by the dealer for a fee or you can go to Autozone and read it for free.

Tighten your gas cap as this can trigger emissions related CELs although I believe the D actually has a check gas cap warning message that can display.

It sounds like the battery in your wife's fob is weak. The chip is readable, but the key no longer transmits so the D cannot 'see' the fob until it is physically inserted. Just change out the battery and report back. I believe it is a CR2032 button battery in those.

David,

If the engine light continues to stay on after doing as suggested in your Owner's Manual, I would recommend bringing the vehicle to a Dodge dealer for further diagnosis. A 2012, sounds like it would have the full factory warranty still applied.

To remove the engine start/stop button as per the Owner's Manual; insert the metal part of the emergency key under the chrome bezel at the 6 o'clock position and gently pry the button loose. The cost at the dealer to have a key reprogrammed will vary as dealers establish their own prices for the parts and service that they provide.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the welcome and helpful info. I'll try it tonight after work and report back.

I've thoroughly enjoyed reading the forum in the past week.

I paid around $50.00 to have a key programmed at my dealer. Enjoy your new ride and welcome.

Sounds like we have similar stories? My '12 has 25k miles (Crew AWD) and I just got it as well. Enterprise sale, I'd imagine yours was as well? Anyways, I hope you get your engine light resolved. (I'm not having any issues really, except trying to get my phone to sync up properly)

Good gravy, I love my Durango. I feel like I went back 20 years to when I first started driving and had to think up excuses to run out and get things! I'm driving my wife nuts!

Got mine from CarMax. Yea, I was out at 5:00 am the other morning going out in my PJ's trying different things I was reading in the manual. I think I mostly have it figured out what all I have on it. Every morning at work first thing they ask me, "what did you find out today?"

One of my local dealers wants $120 to reprogram my wife's key fob. Not going to happen. It wasn't the battery. The EVAC said it was a faulty key fob...it will crank the durango if in the ignition, open/close doors by pressing the buttons on the fob but just want work on the keyless things. For $120 she will have to live without them.

Will have the engine light checked this Saturday. Only driving it about 5 miles a day to work and back.
