Default 2011 Citadel 5.7 w/ P0016 and P000B codes!

Hello all,

My wife's 2011 Durango is currently displaying a CEL with reference codes of P0016 and P000B. The truck is running poorly and doesn't accelerate worth a darn. I have seen other threads indicating timing chain / belt issues as the cause of this error code, however, none that denote such a new vehicle.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to what else may be causing this? I'm really struggling to believe I've got a worn timing belt...

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Chad

P0016 crankshaft position sensor
P000B camshaft position sensor
Both these codes can also have to do with a MDS error from what I am reading.

Thank you for the comment, this does seem like it's going into MDS immediately. Any thoughts around how to correct? I've read about filling up with the engine running, causing a CEL and potentially leading to MDS issues? Quite frankly, I better understand diesel motors than these new gassers... any suggestions other than a trip to the dealer (I'm out of warranty)!

Found some info on the crankshaft position sensor code on the challenger forum... I would definately get her into the dealer asap as it sounds like the truck is running in limp mode.. good luck!

Causes

Causes may include:
  • Timing chain stretched, or timing belt skipped a tooth due to wear , Misalignment of timing belt/chain , Tone ring on crankshaft slipped/broken , Tone ring on camshaft slipped/broken , Bad crank sensor , Bad cam sensor , Damaged wiring to crank/cam sensor
  • Timing belt/chain tensioner damaged
Possible Solutions
  1. First, visually inspect the cam and crank sensors and their harnesses for damage. If you notice broken/frayed wires, repair and recheck. If you have access to a scope, check the cam and crank patterns. If a pattern is missing, suspect a bad sensor or a slipping tone ring. Remove the cam gear and the crankshaft harmonic balancer and inspect the tone rings for proper alignment and make sure they're not loose or damaged or that they haven't sheared the key that aligns them. If they are properly installed, replace the sensor.
  2. If the signal appears normal, then check the timing chain/belt for proper alignment. If it's misaligned, check for a damaged tensioner that may have allowed the chain/belt to slip a tooth or several teeth. Also check that the belt/chain isn't stretched. Repair and recheck.

Chad,

There was a case I found that involves the dealership checking the oil control valve. See below.

Case Number: S1118000063
Release Date: 01/20/2012
Symptom/Vehicle Issue: MIL Illumination/Check Engine Light On And /Or DTC P0016,P000B Active
Diagnosis:
Scan vehicle modules for DTC using wiTech if P0016 and or P000B are active proceed with repair procedure.
Repair Procedure:
Inspect the Variable Valve Timing Oil Control Valve for distorted or missing filter screens

I greatly appreciate the feedback. I dropped the truck off at our local dealer this morning. We'll see what they come back with and I'll post an update.

I've received an inquiry from a fellow forum member and thought I'd post for all to benefit from.

It took the dealer some time and the service manager actually argued with me about the error code... none the less, it was oil (maybe sending unit or filter - sorry I don't recall exactly) related.

The root problem is the OCV... changing or replacing oil, filter or camshaft position sensor is putting a bandaid on the root problem... I’ll bet in 4-5k miles the check engine light comes on again and you loss power..
