Fintan, I'm not moving my Interceptor because I'm worried about it melting. If you read my initial post the Hypertech unit was 14 degrees "cooler" than the outside of the fuse box it sits in and 19 degrees cooler than your exposed PCM. So my experiment proves that the Hypertech unit is completely safe in there. I however have decided to build a mount for it just so when I show off my ride people can actually SEE where the modification is. Rather than saying my tuner module is "under there". And since I am building a rad looking box for it I might as well mount it in the coolest area available.

Hypertech uses one of the better spots in the engine compartment and assuming an idiot doesn't go crazy with a pressure sprayer under there the unit will be just fine.

All things considered the failed unit was in a Jeep...Could he have been off roading...water crossing??? WHo knows teh track record is pretty good on this unit.

Ive had mine the longest here and I havent had a single issue. Wouldnt know it was there if I wasnt getting better performance and having more fun driving!

Also mine is up high on and on a steep angle and iys
never been wet after wash or rain

You guys mean to tell me that an internal combustion engine produces extreme amounts of heat? Hahaha!

I live in south Florida so we get heavy downpours during the hurricane season and standing water so I'm just paranoid but if people have had them a while with the same types of weather than I'm comfortable with the recommended spot. I stopped power washing engines since my 87 Iroc. Too many sensors and electronics now to worry about.

Actually this is the hottest engine compartment of any car I've ever owned. It's almost completely enclosed. To give you an idea my aluminum intake manifold on my camaro SS runs cooler than just the plastic cover on the hemi. And I have unwrapped headers in there.

UPDATE: Installed 180 Degree Thermostat and ran the same test scenario. The overall engine compartment temps changed more than I expected. Changes in Bold

Exh. Manifold. 396 degrees // 390 degrees
Engine firewall 216 degrees // 198 degrees
Driver Head. 198 degrees // 187 degrees
Engine Cover.139 degrees // 119 degrees
PCM. 127 degrees // 115 degrees
fuse box 122 degrees // 112 degrees
Volant tube. 116 degrees // 103 degrees
Hypertech unit. 108 degrees // 97 degrees
Volant Air filter. 96 degrees // 94 degrees


Again these are averages over 2 days with one day (2) degrees warmer and the second day was (4) degrees cooler. Vehicle was fully warmed up, driven the same route for the same amount of time and 185 degrees at shut down compared to 204 previously.

Also used 1 bottle of Water Wetter coolant additive.
