I think a lot has to do with wind drag. Boats are sleek. The Durango is not that tall, so my trailer just sits there like a giant tall brick behind it. My Hi-Lo did much better as it was car height when towing.
I agree, the D's are so designed to be great in the air that just mt ski rack loaded with 4 skis ans 2 boards I loose a good 3-4 mpg be it 4 passengers and some luggage as well.
I use it only in very hilly terrain, on the highway the motor has plenty of torque and pulls many hills without downshifting, Cruise control works so much better than my 2004 & 2008 D's with 4.7L
I don't pull too much. Pull my ATV and my father in laws golf cart on a small trailer. Hardly even know it is back there except for the loss in fuel economy. Pulling my ATV used to really drag down my V6 Sport Trac.

Yup. Several years ago I towed a 3,500lb boxy trailer (with a different to vehicle). When I switch to the 5,000lb Airstream, I got better mileage. The Airstream is very rounded and it greatly reduces wind resistance.
