Default thinking of re-doing the Alpine sub, thoughts?

I'm laying plans to redo the sub in my stock Alpine system. who's done this or looked into it and can give some feedback or ideas?

for now, I'm ok with the mids and highs from the stock system. yes, at some point, I'll probably replace those speakers, but for now with the EQ levels fixed, I think it provides pretty decent sound up to medium levels.

but theres no low end. so that needs to be fixed.

I like tight, solid bass. I do not like boomy bass. I'm into sound quality more than sound volume. so I'm good with a sealed box setup.

I'm planning on adding an amplifier inline on the sub speaker level feed. the sub is obviously underpowered to start with. maybe something along the lines of a RF R500X1D Prime.

what's the deepest 8" sub that would fit in the stock box?

has anyone changed out the 8" sub and added polyfil to the stock enclosure?

or who has put a custom box in the stock location with a 10" or 12" sub?

my goal is to keep my current storage area under the cover. if I go with a custom box I think I would place the sub firing up with a grill over it. it would have the stock storage cover over it anyway for protection. I think with enough power the stock storage cover wouldn't be a real issue.

any suggestions or feedback is much appreciated.

I did this... I put a Kicker dx500.1 amp, mounted underneath the hatch panel and mounted the remote level under the dash... I also replaced the sub with an 8" Pioneer flat piston... THis part, however, was a pain and doesn't work very well. The plastic box is pretty flimsy and flexes a lot. Not to mention the fact that the OEM sub has a screw that goes into the magnet on the back, so when you replace it you have a hole to plug up. Not ideal. I decided to cut out the Alpine labeled plastic over the sub, built a small box and put the 8 in that. It is better, but I think I wanna go with a 10 instead (I have a MB Quart 10" flat left from a different project in my GTI). I'm still down firing so I don't know if changing that would make a difference.

so you cut out the stock sub 'box'? I'm thinking the same thing. just go with a custome enclosure that would fit in the same space. it still seems pretty shallow to me though. especially moving up to a 10". why did you leave yours firing down still? was that just simpler or did you have another reason?

No, I cut the plastic that _covers_ the box (the part that you can see with the floor hatch open, has Alpine on it). this allowed me to see the stock box directly under the floor hatch and allowed me to built a slightly larger box. I'll try to get some pictures this evening. The box is not 'finished' so it's still wood, as I wasn't sure if I was going to keep it or not, so you'll have to pardon the look. The MBQuart 10 that I have only needs .5 cuft, so it doesn't have to be a large box. If I was better with fiberglass, I'd do something with that, but *shrug*... As far as down firing, with bass it doesn't really matter the direction, and rather than have it fire into the hard plastic floor hatch, I'd rather it fire underneath everything and can emanate from under the seats... And it keeps the sub more protected (and hidden), as we make our weekend trips to Hell*Mart with the D...

I know it is expensive, but JL Audio sub is amazing in the D - totally hidden beneath deck- very tight bass.

But they discontinued the stelalthbox. After speaking to the guy that built it at JL they weren't happy with the output and canned it.
