So you went out and spent $40k - 60k on a new 4-wheel drive truck and put big off-road tires on it so you could get to work out in the oilfields. You could have just bought a 1920's era Dodge!

As this video demonstrates, our roads have come a long way in 94 years. One must wonder if many of our 4 wheel drive and ATVs could do as well as this old Dodge sedan did.

Suspension sure has come a long way though.

 

Yes 4wd has advanced a lot in the last 100 years with brake based torque vectoring, viscous coupling center diffs, front to rear and wheel to wheel torque variances that are all electronically controlled but the real comparison is how ticked you would be when you just spent $16,900 "in 1920s dollars" and find out the only reason your seats are heated is because you just pissed your shorts coming down a 10 foot "bump" in the road with drum brakes, no abs and the only airbag was your buddies **** in your face because there were no seatbelts!!!

 

that 1920's dodge might just be more capable off road that a 3rd gen D, really surprised what it was able to do in the video haha. Probably because its so light.

 

Just like snow - narrow tires are better

 

Chains don't hurt . . if you look closely in some views, they are visible.

 

I don't think my 3G AWD is any better than my 2G (2005) AWD Durango, which was pretty worthless offroad the one time I needed it. On an icy morning I came around a left curve to find a passenger van sideways across my lane and people getting back in it after apparently pushing it back on the road. Had about a second to choose whether to try to swing way around it or go straight offroad into a small park. Took the park, rear of the Durango ended up only 5 feet from the road and I was only in about six inches of snow, on level ground. Put it in 4Low and it just spun, no traction at all, and it was not high centered. Tried pushing but ended up towed out. Of course I broke the air dam.

 

I don't suppose anyone in the passenger van offered to help either....
