Default OEM Roof Rack Question

Second post of the day.

New 2015 Durango R/T owner. One option that I really wanted on my Durango is the Stow In Place Roof Rack I believe direct from Dodge. I looked everywhere on the internets and Dodge dealers and Original Part websites. Every place I look I see solutions for Roof Racks - everything but original Dodge Roof rack is presented. I can find one from Thule, etc... Has anyone worked with their local Dodge Dealer to install Stow In Place Roof Rack after the fact? If so how much did it cost installed? If you have the Stow In Place Roof Rack for their Dodge are they worth it? Sturdy? If you have another suggestion besides Stow In Place Roof Rack then please offer this in your response.

Just want to carry a soft luggage bag, maybe some wood beams for short transport, maybe ladder - again short transport.

Thanks

Jerry

I just called my local Dodge Dealer Parts department. He had no clue about Stow N Place Roof Rack from Dodge. I said Dude it's shown on Dodge's website! It's not even an option while ordering a vehicle. It sates on the website that it is aftermarket, but it doesn't come up during internet seraches, or going to Mopar Parts!

You just need the proper terminology:

@coldsteel

Thanks - I will search for P/N though can you share where you found these parts? Website?

It says 2011 - wonder if 2015 is same?

I wonder if Dodge did away with these on newer Durango's.

Forget the Factory installed roof racks. From further research:

Durango R/T do not have a factory roof rack option
Dodge dealers refuse to install them due to possible interference with rear air bags
Supposedly newer Durangos have different roof panels that prevent reliable attachment of roof racks.

Will look at removeable cross bars. Thule seems like the go to for cross bars. Looking for something that won't scratch paint - is extremely robust/strong. Any recommendations here?

Here is an example of Thules being attached at the window openings that look to far foward:

Seems like this would cause interference with the sky roof.

Me again. It bothers me that there is no option for roof rails for the Dodge Durango R/T after the fact. I do not like the Cross Bars that attach to the door openings. Seems very limited front to back - seems like cargo carriers will be biased towards the front. I found this on the internet - seems like it will fit Durango:

http://www.perrycraft.com/p-2891-spo...y-180-lbs.aspx

180 lbs load. Adjustable front to back. It does screw into the roof. I have no doubt Dodge Dealer wouldn't install this. Has anyone went to a third party to do installs? Would there be any reason I would void warranty in performing third party roof rail install?

Thanks

I recommend Rhino rack removable cross bars. I've used them for the last three years on my 2013 R/T with a cargo box. They have only been used with the roof box for road trips and vacations. They are easy to install/ remove and the wind noise is minimal. I plan on trading my Durango next month, so they are available if you are interested.

Default Alternatives?

I agree it's a bummer that they don't put a rack on the RT, I would have liked one too. But after having my crew model for four years which DID have a rack, I can tell you I used them absolutely... never. Once tried to carry a 28' ladder. They were too close together to be helpful.

What I do use, monthly, is my 4x8' utility trailer. It cost me a few hundred bucks, doesn't risk making the roof leak, and is far more helpful in my opinion. It's like having a pickup when you need one.

If I were to carry bicycles outside of the vehicle, I would be looking at a trailer hitch mounted carrier.

Just saying, step back and think about this... aftermarket stuff is expensive and their might be some other options to consider.
