Default Engine brake like noise from rear passenger side.

Good day all, new member here. Was with the Canadian forum, but the site performs so poorly I bailed and joined this one. Please know I do update the forums I am a member of with any findings when troubleshooting to keep the group informed and add value.

Today's question...... after approximately 150km's of highway travel in pretty inclement weather (-25 degrees celsius), my 2018 r/t started making a noise that I can only describe as being similar to the engine/jake brakes on a semi. It was fairly loud and alarming. It was definitely coming from the rear passenger side area of the truck. At the time, the highway was bad so I was kind of lugging it. Once I got off the highway and rpms were higher the noise went away. The noise was very disturbing so I didn't try accelerating while on the highway for fear of breaking something.

No check engine lights came on.

I thought maybe something like ice got caught up in the wheel well area but I can't see that being a possibility given the duration of the noise and its persistence.

It goes into the shop on Monday.... good timing. Was hoping someone here may have experienced the same so I can advise my mechanic. Tried searching this site for a similar case but drew a blank.

Thanks in advance for any input...... cheers.

Engine?? How many miles on it? I would think maybe the cat was clogging up, but, that's not something that would just 'go away'....... and an exhaust leak would be something you would hear all the time as well... Was the noise accompanied by any sort of vibration/shaking while rollin' down the road??

Welcome to DF!

Thanks for the welcome and response.

130,000KM. 5.7 2018.

No shaking or rolling per se just a minor vibration kind of like going over rumble strips.

No error codes displayed, but will have mechanic check tomorrow.

Got to thinking about this and recalled I had a similar noise experience, not the exact same, but similar and my tranny guy told me to turn off eco-mode. He said it had to do with how the vehicle programs/trains itself. Couldn't believe it, but turned it off and in 2 years have not heard it again.

When this noise happened, i was running low on fuel and driving in a manner inconsistent with normal driving. Wondering if this vehicle put itself in eco-mode due to fuel level and the way I was driving.

Took it out yesterday afternoon and couldn't get it to make the noise again. Ran perfectly.

Thanks again and cheers.

I don't know enough about their programming to say for sure, but, being low on fuel, and 'spirited' driving may indeed invoke eco mode...... See what the wrench has to say tomorrow.
