Data Log Update: Torque converter installed yesterday. truck seems to accelerate a bit better than before and the revs appear to go up faster on the Tach. Its hot out today and alot of traffic so I did only two runs. Well I have more Torque being delivered on launch thats for sure because (WELCOME TO TIRE SPIN) now my one wheel tire spins on takeoff. Both in L1 and D launches with OD off in 2WD. So I just got my new tires and that was enough of that at $383 a Tire (on sale). Overall I am pleased with this mod but woudhave liked to beat my current best time (no tire spin). I need to do the photobucket thing to post some pics of the install on another post. One day when we get a cool morning I may try again. Next mod will be ported TB and MIT. It will be a while before I can do my gears (Oct-Nov).

How is the driveablility compared to the stock converter?

Ah Driveability! Well I've driven it this week and have notice some good and some bad with this TC. If I hammer it and stay on the throttle it is not bad at all, but i think the part throttle (if I can call it that) feels like it's not doing anything but rev more, example at say 30 mph I give it a bit and the tach flies up quicker but like without the acceleration (does that make sense). If I accelerate gradually it is improved for sure. I can say the Truck is louder than before overall until the revs settle down on cruise up to speed sort of speaking.

So heres what I think my problem is or why this TC does not like my normal driving habits.
Problem One. My Cam. IMO the 6.1 cam works at about 4000 and above, the new torque converter shoots me into say 2500 quickly where the cam is crap and since I have already lost some bottum end (compared to stock) I am really feeling that loss now and the headers are not enough to take up the slack. So solution 1 to my problem, dump the cam and put in better cam (for example a 260 Comp or Crazy Spartan, Jay or Sidewinder) that will be right in the meat of torque when the TC shoots up into that 25/2600 Range. Problem two, the 3.55's are amplifying problem No.1.

So if my theory is right which solution do I employ first, new Cam or Gears.
In my opinion I need to switch the Cam out first and then I believe I will get back my driveability. Then add the gears and really fly.

Now I could be out to lunch here but if I change the gears first, I beleive the lack of Cam power at 2500 RPM when she revs up would still be there. Dunno, what do you guys think, Maybe I need to get used of it more, I feel there is something happenning here and at the same time feel I've lost something as well. Today I have mixed feelings, I found also today when I had to climb a couple of hills and maintain 75 mph the tranny reved up from about 2K to 3 K then tapered back down as my speed came back over the 75. I understand that lower gears would fix that too. So thats the scoop. P.S. Tried some Huskey Fuel Today they advertise their fuel grades as 90-92 and 94 Octane with the lower having 10 percent methanol. So I think the 94 has a small percentage of that corn juice as well, so we'll see how she runs with that stuff on my 91 Canned Tune.

imo You would be better served with gears. Your tc dump at 2500 will launch you off the starting line. I have 3.92's with no cam, And the basic three mod's. And I did the same 0-30 time as you. At 0-60 you are a full second faster. Too make up the slack as you put it, change the gears. period.

Well... Problem No1 is your cam / wrong stall for your setup. The stall you have is roughly 200rpm higher than the stock converter, for a top end cam you really should have put the stall between 2800 and 3000. It could also be the way that the TC is working, I have no clue how those break-a-way TCI setups actually work, I do know that there are not a whole lot of people running them so that could be causing some of your issues under normal driving. So swapping to a lowend cam should help but no idea if it will "fix" the part throttle issue

Problem No2, you REALLY need to ditch the 3.55's. going to a 4.56 will get you into your power band a lot better than the 3.55s will.

Personally with my APS converter with a 2800 stall and 4.56 gears, I have had none of the issues you are describing, but I still (unforunately) have the stock cam in it. So it could be the cam and it could be the gears...

What I would do if it was my truck would be to swap out the gears first. Jump to some 4.56's, that should rase your rpms enough to take more advantage of of your cam. Now you wont be cruising at 4000rpms going down the freeway (more like 2200 +/-) but it should fix some of your issues.

RamMan, there is no doubt in my mind, gears (4:56) is what you need next. With the gears and TC in place you will be better able to determine the cam you want to use.
