I've got an '04 QC 4x4 Hemi w/ 3.92 rears.. I just did my first "road trip" from Dallas,TX to Atlanta,GA and back.. (1,565mi)
Ran 87 octane "Unleaded Reg" on the way out.. Me, my dog and a couple of duffle bags.. Traveling west to east, meaning the wind was to my back.. Average: 14.4mpg...
Ran 89 octane "Unleaded Plus" on the return trip.. (owner's manual recommends 89 octane for the Hemi) It was me, my dog, two other people and a truck bed full of stuff (rough guess of 500-800lbs more "cargo").. Traveling from east to west, into the wind.. Average: 15.9mpg..
My average speed there and back was 75mph without the cruise control on.. (I'm a truck driver so I rarely use it.)
Going by my personal experience, I'm sticking with the 89 octane.. If the "work load" had been identical, I could've probably achieved almost a 2mpg increase in fuel economy, which would outweigh the difference in price between that and the 87 octane.. (In this part of Texas, it's $2.28pg for "Regular" and $2.38pg for "Plus"

Its no myth that the way you drive has a lot to do with your fuel mileage, I only have like 160 miles on my 05 quad cab, so I am not a good judge of mileage. Like that guy said, take off slow, it will help, the more you keep your foot out of there, the better she will do, also on trips, use the cruise control when you can!

Over the last 2440 miles I have averaged 15.9 MPG. This is a combination of both City and Highway miles. On a trip from Grand Rapids, Michigan to St. Louis Mo. I averaged 17.4 MPG there and 18.3 MPG back with the air on.

Just returned from a road trip (04 Quad Hemi 2X4) with the A/C running, speed at approx 70-75 I was getting 16.2 according to overhead reading.
That being said, I knew my MPG was not going to be 25+ per Gal when I bought the Hemi so I am well pleased with the way my has been running. The $$ of Gas hurts, but lifes too short to drive anything but a Hemi.....and I am 59 yrs old.
If I really want to cut down on the $$$ I spend for gas I can always jump on the Harley(Roadking Classic) and ride it to work all week and use the Hemi on the week-ends.

2005 reg cab swb Ram SLT Hemi, 3.92 gears, 20" wheels, Rhino liner. About 900 miles on it so far, mostly in town and on blacktop county roads. I'm averaging 15.9 mpg with ac on. I use the cruise control quite a bit when cruising and try to minimize my full stops. I get the same mileage if I just drive it or baby it, so I drive it .I'm happy with my mileage.
