Purchased a locking gas cap this morning from Advanced. Father has always had one but I never did since I was too stubborn to fork up the few small bills to buy one.

I put one on the truck maybe about two years ago. Of all places, up at the farm where there are exactly two neighbors within a mile and a half, the 60 year old guy who owns the big farm across the street and his 63 year old wife. Woke up one morning and found the fuel door open and the cap dangling. I was initially very concerned someone poured something into my tank, but a little while later I found that the gas can that was setting under the overhanging roof outside the barn was gone. Figured it was someone trying to siphon gas.

Commenced to drive 16 miles into town and got me a locking cap for all of about $10 at Auto Zone.

I really need to put one on the Grand Cherokee too, though...

There is one issue about those locking caps. They may stop the put stuff in my tank guy. But the I want your gas guy might return with a cordless drill.

Well, you can't really stop anybody from stealing anything if they want it bad enough, but hopefully you can make it enough of a PIA that they move on to another vehicle someplace else...

I dunno, I think the locking cap would be pretty effective. You would really have to be desperate to drill a tank from the undercarriage instead of just finding another driver who didn't have the cap. And again, I bet a crowbar might even pry the cap off if you really wanted it to, locked or not, since most of them are plastic and plastic threading is pretty easy to strip, right? I dunno', I mean I know the threading isn't fully set and floats to allow the right tightness to be achieved without over or under tightening.

Like SLT8 said, it DETERS, but doesn't necessarily make you bullet proof. If someone wants you bad enough, they will figure out how to get you. So your tank is locked? Well I'm sure a hammer through the windows or playing drums on your hood would also suffice, not that I condone any of it. Back to my karma point: just don't make people mad and that will eliminate MOST of the threat. Of course there are always random vandals, but just being polite usually does the trick.

Oh, and that's another point Hammer brought on. The locking caps will also prevent gas stealers, not just in-the-tank vandals. If you're looking to steal gas you are gonna' take the easy targets, not something you have to either pick or brute force. That's just too much time and attention if you're trying to work quick and not get caught.

^^^^ Uh, I think the drill would be used on the locking cap, and not the tank that is locked. Just a guess; Gonna post any pix fugg? Thats a selling point with most of us here.

Call it a ten dollar insurance policy. Sucker spins like a top without the key . Locking gas cap, ftw.
